Even with a number of days last week with low temperatures into the lower 30s°F, Ames still has yet to have a sub 32°F temperature this fall season. It is certainly quite late into the season without a freezing temperature. The featured chart presents some metrics for Ames on the first fall season sub 32°F temperature. The top chart presents the first date and the subsequent number of days with as cold a low temperature over the winter season. The bottom chart shows the accumulated frequency by day of the year for having the first such event. The side panels show some stats on the plotted dates. The bottom right panel indicates that this year will finish in the top 10 for latest such dates. Please note that the tables are organized by day of the year, so years will a leap day will appear to be out of order. The near term forecast has some opportunity to make it into November at least without a freezing temperature, but there will be a few chances over the coming days and certainly climatology drives a significant chance about any day this time of year.
