Dear all,
Over the last three years the financial system was at risk and threatened to collapse. Huge efforts were undertaken for its stabilisation which resulted in increases in the national debt level of many countries, and therefore, the burden of each citizen.
These events suggest that the common notion of politics, the economy and many representatives of mainstream economics – that self-control, soft regulation and own interests will lead to efficient financial markets - is flawed. However, aside from marginal reforms, no major lessons have been learned.
The Frankfurt Economic Policy Association (FEPA) of the Goethe University in Frankfurt would like to invite you to our next FEPAbate on Campus Westend:
Lessons from the Financial Meltdown? The Proposal of Radical Financial Reforms
Prof. Dr. Dr. Helge Peukert (University of Erfurt)
10. May 2011, 19:00 - RuW, Room 4.202
Mr. Peukert will present selected topics of his book ‘Die große Finanzmarktkrise’ (2010, Metropolis) which tries to meet this shortcoming by showing deficits in the international discussion and in the current stand of economic theory. Conclusions from these insights were combined with alternative theoretical concepts from Veblen, Galbraith, Keynes and Minsky, among others, in order to derive proposals for reform. These include a 100% minimum reserve, limitation of bank size, separation of business and investment banks, significantly higher equity requirements and reduction of the derivatives volume traded.
Our FEPAbate will revolve around selected proposals of reform which will be underpinned by the background knowledge Mr Peukert can provide from his comprehensive elaboration. Join us to learn about and discuss interesting, controversial and partly drastic possibilities to meet the gap the financial crisis has left!
Helge Peukert: ‚Die große Finanzmartkrise‘, published in Metropolis (2010, Marburg)
The Frankfurt Economic Policy Association (FEPA) is a student initiative at the Goethe University Frankfurt where the latest insights from economic thinking and theory meet policy and business practices. We meet on a regular basis in our FEPAbates to discuss current economic and business issues and organize panel discussions with speakers from politics, academia, businesses and members of the civil society.
You are welcome to forward this Email and we are looking forward to see many of you,
Irina Clemens
