NICT researchers will be in I2R on 13 Dec (Monday) to give an overview of their research in optical networks and devices.
Presentation 1: Overview of NICT R&D activities
This presentation will cover all the major R&D activities in all NICT research centers, including those related to Optical Communications.
Presenter: Dr. Tetsuya Kawanishi
Dr. Kawanishi received the B.E., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics from Kyoto University, in 1992, 1994 and 1997, respectively. From 1994 to 1995, he worked for Production Engineering Laboratory of Panasonic. In 1997, he was with Venture Business Laboratory of Kyoto University. He joined the Communications Research Laboratory, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (from April 1, 2004, NICT), Koganei, Tokyo, in 1998. He was a Visiting Scholar of University of California at San Diego, USA, in 2004. He is now a Research Manager of NICT, and is currently working on high-speed optical modulators and on RF photonics.
Presentation 2: Research activities for photonic device in NICT
This talk will focus on semiconductor quantum dot devices. Abstract: We have developed the technique for the fabrication of ultra-high density quantum dot with strain compensation method. Using this technique, we have fabricated quantum dot laser which showed the property of temperature insensitivity. We also evaluated optical gain of our quantum dot structure and obtained a large gain.
Presenter: Dr. Kouichi Akahane
Kouichi Akahane received the B.E., M.E. and Ph.D degrees in Material Science from University of Tsukuba, in 1997, 1999, and 2002, respectively. He joined the Communications Research Laboratory (from April 1, 2004, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology), Koganei, Tokyo in 2002. He is now a Senior Researcher of National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, and is currently working on semiconductor photonic devices.
The presentations will be in the Franklin meeting room on the 11F of the Connexis (South) Tower in Fusionopolis. The talks will start promptly at 1.30pm and no prior registration is required. The event is expected to last 1hr.
