PES/IAS/PELS Joint Chapter
The Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Hyd. Section
Invites you for
Technical Lecture on
Photovoltaics - Technologies, Applications and Trends
Date : Saturday, June, 25th 2011
Venue : NTPC Conference Hall, MCH Complex, Near Harihara Kala Bhavan,
R.P Road, Secunderabad-3.
Speaker : Col. (Dr.) T S Surendra
Colonel (Dr) Surendra obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electronics) from the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), and also was recipient of the Director’s Gold Medal for standing first. He received his Master’s degree in Power Apparatus and Systems from IIT Delhi and specialized in Radar engineering with Commandant’s Silver Medal for standing first in the Officers Radar Equipment Course conducted at MCEME. His research activity was in the area of Energy Systems (Study and evaluation of different Photovoltaic technologies leading to cost reduction and increased life of PV modules). He was awarded a Ph.D degree by JNTU.
He has worked in the PV industry for fourteen years at a senior level and was instrumental in the setting up of a 3 MW plant at Hyderabad, India, for the manufacture of PV cells, modules and systems based on amorphous silicon technology in collaboration with Energy Conversion Devices (ECD), Troy, MI, USA. He was involved with production, testing, quality control and system integration. He trained at ECD, Troy MI, USA and at Unisolar Ovonic at Auburn Hills, USA. He also trained at the erstwhile InterSolar, Wales, UK. He was sponsored by the World Bank/IREDA to attend a ‘PV System design’ program at IIT Madras and at the former Siemen’s Training School at Camarillo, CA, USA. He has studied various PV manufacturing facilities at USA (Frederick, Toana, Newark, Toledo, Troy, Camarillo, Bedford - Massachusetts etc), Germany, Japan (Toyooka, Osaka), UK (Bridgend, Wales) and S.Korea. He has consulted for a Telecom Major at KL, Malaysia. Col. TSS has implemented a World Bank sponsored solar pumping program in the southern states of India in 1998-2000 and also guided a pilot market seeding program of solar lanterns sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation and co-sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1991-92. He was directly involved in introducing in India the DC floating pump powered by amorphous silicon PV modules. He is currently a Professor and Principal at the Padmasri Dr. B.V. Raju Institute of Technology, Vishnupur, Narsapur, Medak District.
Session Details : In stark contrast to the beginning of the twentieth century which heralded the era of coal, oil, gasoline and automobiles, the first decade of the twenty first century is signalling a perceptible shift away from fossil fuels and towards alternative (renewable) sources of energy. Renewable energy technologies are assuming increasing relevance today with the escalation of costs, increase of pollution levels and depletion of conventional sources of energy. Among renewable energy technologies, Photovoltaics (PV), which is the silent conversion of light energy into electrical energy, is bound to occupy a significant portion of the energy portfolio of most countries in the next ten years. This has spawned renewed interest in silicon and non-silicon PV technologies such as silicon film, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium diselenide and dye-sensitized nano-crystalline technology. The Government of India have announced the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission that envisages the setting up of 20 GW of solar PV and solar thermal installations by the year 2022. The PV Industry is experiencing a phenomenal growth in terms of production, installations and shipments. India, too, is experiencing a PV boom with capacity additions, setting up of economies of scale plants and increased thrust in R & D. Col Surendra’s talk on “Photovoltaics – Technologies, Applications and Trends” will give an overview of current and emerging technologies and also a deeper insight into the expanding application base including a discussion on a case study.
