Speaker Profiles:
Prof. V K Damodaran
Over 50 years of professional experience, Prof. V K Damodaran taught at College of Engineering, Guindy (now Anna University) and at NIT Calicut (1970 – 1980); held positions as Director of EMC (Energy Management Centre) and Ex-officio Secretary to Govt., later as Honorary Vice Chairman of EMC; Director of Science & Technology and Environment, Govt. of Kerala; Controller of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology; Regional Electrical Inspector to Govt. of Kerala, and Head of Technical Sciences and Asst. Director of State Institute of Languages, Kerala. He held position as the Managing Director of UN sponsored International Network on Small Hydropower (and the UNIDO International Centre on SHP) in Hangzhou, China (2001-’05). Prof. V. K. Damodaran is currently the Director General of the International Non-Governmental Cooperation Organization for Renewable Energy (INGCORE) and Chairman of Centre for Environment and Development, Trivandrum. He was the Resident Managing Director (Technical) of the International Network on Small Hydro Power (IN-SHP) based in Hangzhou, China, from August 2001 to June 2005. He is active in promoting Energy Conservation and Management, Renewable Energy technologies, and Environment protection within India and abroad. An international consultant to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, he strives to help the third world countries to use Renewable Energy for the needs of the rural poor. Prof. VKD was also Past Chair, IEEE Kerala section.
Dr. Juan M. de Bedout
Juan de Bedout is the Chief Technology Officer for GE’s Energy Management, leading a team of approximately 3,700 engineers in over 20 countries around the world. Before this role, Juan was in GE Global Research as the Technology Director – Electrical Technologies & Systems. He has been with GE since 2000 and has developed strong leadership and considerable technical depth and breadth spanning electrical technologies, with emphasis in power conversion and control systems. Juan has worked in a number of roles in support of GE’s technical organization including Global Technology Leader – Global Research Power Conversion Systems, Manager – Global Research Electric Power & Propulsion Systems Lab and Control Systems Engineer. Key technology spaces supported by this team included advanced generators and motors for Energy, Oil & Gas, Aviation Systems and Transportation; Power Converters for Wind, Solar, Transportation, Aviation Systems and Healthcare; controls, protection and energy management for the Smart Grid; and the development of fundamental technologies such as nano-dielectrics and Silicon Carbide which have the potential to enable revolutionary advances in the capabilities of products. An avid Boilermaker through and through, Juan obtained his PhD, Masters and Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, where he specialized in control systems.
