Profile of the Speaker:
Dr. M.V. Krishna Rao carries more than 50 years of technical experience in Power utility business. He retired as Member Technical of Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board, after working for 39 years in various capacities. Since his retirement in year 1999, he is working as consultant, heading Global Energy Consulting Engineers, Hyderabad, an organization providing IT solutions and Consultancy services, to Power sector. He has extensive experience not only in Technical aspects but also in wide spectrum of fields related to the energy sector like Information technology, Metering & Communication Systems, Reforms & Restructuring, Regulatory issues & tariffs, Power markets and Institutional capacity building etc.
He has successfully executed several prestigious consultancy assignments in India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ghana, Ceylon, Nepal and Ethiopia, Tanzania etc for The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, USAID, and DFID, UK Government. Dr. Rao, Chief Architect of IT Solutions at GECE, has designed and developed a complete suite of software solutions encompassing Technical, commercial, Automation and Corporate applications.
Dr. Krishna Rao is Recipient of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visveswaraya Award of Institution of Engineers for the year 1995 and CBIP Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award for the year 1993.
Abstract of the Talk:
Power Distribution system is a complex system, as it covers nook and corner of service area, catering large number of customers. The power utility revenues and customer service are to large extent depending upon the performance of the Distribution systems. The complexity of system calls for deployment new strategies, based on IT & Communication technology for improving system efficiency, to minimise the cost and better the customer service. Some of the well known measures adopted are: Geographical information systems, Asset management, Computer aided Distribution Planning, Centralised Customer call Centres, AMR/ AMI, Smart grids & Distribution automation, Demand side management etc. This talk will present the strategies adopted by utilities in India and other developing countries to modernise distribution systems. The relevance of advanced measures/concepts under implementation in USA and Europe to Indian conditions will also be dealt.
