Dear IEEE Member,

The Big Data Institute at the University of Oxford is the home of the new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Health Data Science.  We are inviting applications for 4-year funded PhD studentships with study commencing 30th September 2019.

The Health Data Science CDT provides one year of taught course work and project-oriented learning, with continued training activities throughout your study.  The coursework covers computational statistics, machine learning, and data engineering, the foundation required to then cover the topics in health data, healthcare technologies, and health research methods. Terms one and two conclude with a data challenge, where small teams will apply the techniques they have learnt to real-world datasets. The third term is spent on two research placements, one of which usually leads on to the topic of your dissertation, with mentors drawn primarily from the departments of Computer Science, Statistics, & Engineering.

Research placement projects are all grounded in some specific challenge involving health data but will use require the development and application of advanced computational and statistical methods.  Specific areas include: using medical imaging in context of other complex data sources, secure management of health data, developing cancer research informatics, the analysis of patient-centric sensor data, creation of smart platforms for decision-making in healthcare, creating new approaches to patient management based upon the analysis of large datasets addressing questions in molecular medicine, developing new techniques to mine existing large health-related datasets, tools to analyse large datasets in genomic medicine, and exploration of the ethical implications of the deployment of  data science technologies.

The studentships cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, an annual stipend (£17,509 GBP in 2019/20). To be eligible for a full award, applicants must normally have no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the time of the application.

Students are required to have 1st class or high upper 2nd class bachelor's degree, or a master's degree with merit or distinction, in computer science, statistics, engineering or any scientific area that relates to health data science. We particularly welcome applications from women and individuals from minority ethnic groups.

Further information, including details of how to apply, is available at: http://www.bdi.ox.ac.uk/cdt-hds. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, the first batch on 31 March 2019, until the studentships are filled.
