Since the topic for the project has not been chosen yet, maybe we could
just throw some ideas around, not proper project proposals, just
informal stuff? Here's mine -
1. Swarm Intelligence/Robotics - this seems to be the in thing now. The
basic idea is to get agroup of robots to communicate with each other
and think together. One implementation I read about is in mine
detection - by having a number of small inexpensive robots, equipped
with sensors(don't know exactly what kind) to scour an area for mines,
the advantage being that they can cover a greater area, and are more
efficient time-wise than a single robot. I think this field is also
called Emergent systems.
2. A guy at UIUC(i think) designed a robotic arm equipped with a video
camera that continuously bounces a ball to the same height everytime.
This seems like a very nice idea. Also it would be interdisciplinary
which is one of the basic ideas behind this project.
3. A "Quality Control" Bot for PCBs - This is my favourite idea. I'm
sure these must alredy be in use in factories etc. where assembly line
production takes place. It would examine all PCBs passing though on a
conveyor belt through a camera and then compare the picture obtained
with the picture of a reference PCB. It would thus be able to detect
mistakes like missing components, improper soldering etc and identify
bot only which PCBs are faulty but also pinpoint certain types of
faults. Its not really a bot as such, just a camera. If it could be
made at a low cost, we could implement it in the labs at NSIT.
That's all I can think of right now. Please post any ideas you may have.
