IEEE officers, potential future officers, active members,

It's time for us to have a meeting and discuss a few items

Thursday Night on 11/08/07 at Idaho Pizza at Broadway. Please enter this date on your calendars: Thursday night, pizza night! Most of you are busy professionals so lets shoot for 6:00 PM (that should give most of you enough time to work those few extra minutes and still make it to the meeting on time)

Items to consider in this meeting:
1. Annual IEEE Banquet during Engineering Week on February 2008. These are some of the specifics we need to think about and decide on: Speaker, venue, equipment needed for the presentation, and advertisement of this event.

2. Annual budget. Society officers, it would be very important for you to attend so we can appropriate all the funds we can for society future events.

3. Elections/New officers. We are currently operating with no vice-chair and no newsletter editor--we need to fill those positions. In addition, we need to decide whether we need to make any changes to the current leadership positions, including my position as chair. I'm open to new suggestions. In the past the Operation Committee has elected/appointed the officers. Should we change the way things are currently done? Should we have massive open elections where all Boise Section members can vote on their leadership? First, we need to find people willing to run for office. Please think about all these aspects and challenge the status quo!

4. Become acquainted with all officers. That would include the new leadership of IEEE Student Section at Boise State. Scott (Smith), could you please forward this email to the new advisor and the new IEEE officers at Boise State? That would be appreciated.

Any other items I might have forgotten on this email are open for discussion. AND please forward this email to anyone who might be interested to become involved. We are always looking for people who can take this section to a higher standard.

Thanks and see you there,

Dorian Kiri, chair

Thanks to all the attendees that made it to the OpComm meeting. We discussed each of the items in our agenda. Updates in blue, below by each item. There's is one more action item, though, and its very important.

The Annual Banquet will be on  Thursday February 21st, 2008. 6:30-9PM. Venue still undecided. We need your help: During the meeting we decided to have a spotlight of 2-3 small/upcoming/green/cool technologies in Boise. Please do some research, contact the company, ask them to come in and talk to us. If we have representatives from 3 companies give a 20min presentation it would be interesting, short, and sweet.

In order for us not to procrastinate I'm going to place a deadline (not super hard) for you to give us some ideas: November 26,2007. After you have already done the homework, please email us all the company profile (short description) and the presenter. If you think a company is doing something cool we want to hear about it! If by the deadline you think you have something arranged but you don't have all the specifics, that is acceptable, too.

If by the deadline you think you have something arranged but you don't have all the specifics, that is acceptable, too.

2. Annual budget. Society officers, it would be very important for you to attend so we can appropriate all the funds we can for society future events.

I'm just mentioning the changes we made from last year's budget and any highlights I think are important. So here are some numbers for 2008. Societies, we encourage you to use these funds.

2008 BCS Activities $1000.00 (For 2007 BCS did not use any of the funds. We kept the budget the same.)

2008 EDS Activities $750.00 (For 2007 we had budgeted $1000.00 but no funds were requested from EDS. We lowered the amount by $250.00)

2008 WMED $1000.00 (For 2007 we had budgeted $750.00 and all of them were used. The Section believes in WMED and we increased our support to $1000.00. BCS officers and WMED chair, please keep in mind that we can help with $1000.00 for 2008)

2008 PE/IA Activities $500.00 (unchanged from 2007)

2008 GOLD Activities $250 (unchanged from 2007)

2008 Student Branch Activities $250.00 (unchanged from 2007. Student Branch Officers, please keep in mind that this funding is separate from the picnic funds we contribute for your help. Use this funding if you need it)

2088 PACE Events $850.00 (For 2007 we had budgeted $500 and we used more than that. We decided to increase the funding for PACE)

We spend about $1500-$2000 mailing hard copies of the Newsletter. We are thinking about just sending electronic copies and that way save some money which can be used for activities. Before we do that we'll send one more hard copy and ask people who want to continue receiving a hard copy tell us that by filling in this little form we're going to create. That way we can still provide hard copies for the people who like to receive one.

3. Elections/New officers. We are currently operating with no vice-chair and no newsletter editor--we need to fill those positions. In addition, we need to decide whether we need to make any changes to the current leadership positions, including my position as chair. I'm open to new suggestions. Should we have massive open elections where all Boise Section members can vote on their leadership? First, we need to find people willing to run for office. Please think about all these aspects and challenge the status quo!

We decided to fill in the empty positions first. We need to open the positions to all Boise Section members. Brook (past chair) also informed us that previously mass elections have not been very successful. By mass elections we mean having an nomination committee, having more than one candidate for position, and mailing all the members the ballots. We are not giving up on this idea. We need to make attempts to encourage more members from the section to become a little more active.

4. Become acquainted with all officers. That would include the new leadership of IEEE Student Section at Boise State. Scott (Smith), could you please forward this email to the new advisor and the new IEEE officers at Boise State? That would be appreciated.

We met all the representatives beside the officers of the EDS Society

How are you going to keep track of these people? What will you do to
keep track of who joins new and or moves into the section? Automatically
generated lists from HQ are great, maintaining one locally is a
headache. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying there is an extra step
and you need to first decide how it will be done and then by whom it
will be done (membership-have you asked Liz if she is up to this
additional step), newsletter chair..?

That would be excellent! I am trying to get another speaker or two and we can have them share the podium. Each person can present for about 20 minutes. As we discussed, my vision would be to spotlight new/small/innovative technologies. Ron, would be perfect. Dan, please let Ron know that the banquet will be on February 18th, 200E at the Boise State SUB.

Ron Oberleitner, CEO of Caring Technologies and Talk Autism is willing to present at the banquet.

He would basically talk about the current technology solution, BICapture which is a software product for recording behaviors such as autism.  Another solution under development is an embedded video capture and buffering product that acts like a baby monitor with recording capabilities.
