In response to
the devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015, ANSAB has started
supporting the affected communities for their response and recovery attempts.
ANSAB, along with its partners, have supported affected communities of
Sindhupalchok, Kavrepalanchok, Dolakha, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Nuwakot
districts, prioritized based on the number of affected households and current
needs by providing needed assistance on food and the provision for emergency
shelters. ANSAB has developed an
integrated support program that aims to address the much-needed requirements of
the affected populations through two main program components: i) immediate
relief support, comprising food and nutrition, temporary shelter, clean
drinking water, sanitation and hygiene; and (ii) recovery, comprising of safe
shelter and livelihood security leading to development.
Honorable Minister of Agricultural Development releases Kathmandu Declaration on Agroforestry
On March 28, 2015, Honorable
Hari Prasad Parajuli, Minister of Agricultural Development, Government of Nepal
released “Kathmandu Declaration on Agroforestry” in a consultation workshop
organized jointly by the Ministry of
Agricultural Development (MOAD), Ministry
of Forests and Soil Conservation (MFSC) of the Government of Nepal, World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
and ANSAB. The workshop - “Present Status and Future Prospects of Agroforestry
in Nepal” was held at Hotel Himalaya, Kathmandu, Nepal from 26-28 March
2015, and involved series of discussion on 27th and 28th among the participants
from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Kenya representing government
ministries, civil society organizations, Universities and research
institutions.

Published by the Multi
Stakeholder Forestry Programme (MSFP), this paper emerged from a national level study conducted by ANSAB and its
consortium partners to identify the status and prospects for private sector’s
involvement and investment in Nepal’s forestry sector. As a part of this study,
separate papers on five specific topics were prepared a) Improving Value Chain
Governance for growth and equitable development from Forest Industry b) Scope
for Private Forestry in Nepal c) Payment of Ecosystem Services in Nepal:
Status, Prospects and Ways Forward d) Green and Fair Timber Value Chain
Promotion in Nepal e) Most Promising Subsector Option for Forest-Based Enterprises
in Nepal. The findings are based on the national level study, that involved i) consultations
and interviews with key stakeholders and experts at local, national and
international levels, ii) focus group discussions, iii) surveys of domestic
enterprises and financial institutions, iv) case studies, and v) review of
literature and records.

Executive
Director Dr. Bhishma P. Subedi delivered a keynote speech on ‘Mountain Forest
and Enterprise’ and spoke on panels themed ‘Mountain Forestry: Policy,
Governance and institutions’ and‘Forest Based value chain promotion in the HKH
region’ in the International
Symposium on Transforming Mountain Forestry organized from January 18 to 22,
2015 in Dehradun, India. The symposium was organized by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)and Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehradun,
and was supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change of
India, German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), DEIF-UK Aid and the
Austrian Development Agency. The Mountain Forestry Symposium provided a forum
for over 200 regional and global experts to identify sustainable forest
management practices and policies to address the changing conditions in the
Hindu Kush Himalayas and propose a way to address conservation and inclusive
development simultaneously.
Workshop on Quality Planting Material
Production & Supply Systems
ANSAB’s Programs Manager –
Puspa Ghimire participated in a workshop on ‘Quality Planting Material
Production & Supply Systems’in Gwalior, India that finalized the “Guidelines for
Production of Quality Planting Material” and “Guidelines for Certification
Agencies Criteria”. The workshop was organized by the Gwalior
Department of Agriculture and
Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, India, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agriculture University,
Gwalior and World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) from January 16 and
17, 2015, and involved participation of representatives of various governmental
bodies, agricultural universities, research institutions, finance agencies,
farmers’ organizations and the private sector working in India and South Asia
region. It is expected that the documents will be widely adopted in India and
used to increase farmers’ interest and enthusiasm to adopt agroforestry with
the availability of quality planting materials in the market.

Charcoal Briquette Business Model in Nepal: Learning for
Green and Fair Value-Chain Development
ANSAB’s Research,
Planning and Communication Manager – Sudarshan Khanal presented a business
model of charcoal briquette in Nepal that was initiated and developed by the
organization in the Fourth International Forest Connect Workshop held in Hanoi
from 15 to 18 January 2015. The workshop was organized by the International Institute of Environment and Development, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, RECOFTC-The Center for People and Forests and Vietnam Farmers' Union (VNFU) with the aim to share
and discuss findings from successful locally controlled forest business models.
ANSAB’s presentation focused on the entire value chain of the charcoal
briquette and the factors that made the enterprise activities competing in the
biomass based energy sector. Discussed followed after this and other presentation
from other different countries that focused on how these lessons might best be
mainstreamed within ongoing efforts to support forest producer organizations.

>>> | | | | PROJECTS | | | | Global Greengrants Fund awards ANSAB for the Jiri Drinking Water and Sanitation Program
The Global Greengrants Fund has
awarded
ANSAB for its community water supply project. With the grant, ANSAB will work
with the communities of Jiri, Dolakha district for the construction, repair and
maintenance of clean drinking water project and promotion of the sanitation
program. ANSAB has previously worked with the communities of Attarpur village
development committee (VDC) in
Sindhupalchok district, Pokhari kanda and Kunathari VDCs of Surkhet district
and Ghulghule Masding Kapti Community Water Users Committee in Dolakha district
with the grants from the Global Greengrants Fund.

FCPF-Capacity Building on REDD+
for Indigenous Peoples, Southern CSOs and Local Communities
The World Bank has selected ANSAB as an intermediary organization
for its FCPF-Capacity Building of Civil Society Organizations in Asia pacific
region. ANSAB is one of the six organizations selected by the Forest
Carbon Partnership Facility of the World Bank for “Capacity building on REDD+
for Indigenous Peoples and Southern CSOs and Local Communities” in Asia, Africa
and Latin America. The six implementing organizations and the FCPF participated
in a meeting in World Bank Headquarter from May 6 to 8, 2015, where the
participants discussed on the definitions and inputs, implementation
arrangements, outline of operation manual and technical committee to fine tune
the project design and implementation.
