Wadi Ara Interfaith Encounter Group- 2 encounters

October 22nd, 2025

We discussed the status of women in Islam. The Quran contains many laws that care for women and protect their rights. For example, according to Islamic law, a daughter inherits her parents' property along with her brother. A woman has the right to initiate a divorce. The money a woman earns belongs to her, and she has the right to use it as she sees fit.

The Quran sees women's rights and duties as part of family and social relationships, emphasizing mutual love, respect, and justice. Women have rights, including the right to appeal to the courts, and they can demand that these rights be enforced. The Quran also permits polygamy (up to four wives) on condition of full justice for each of them, which aims to ensure the family and the protection of the woman, especially in challenging demographic conditions.

Topic: Status of Women. Various religions, including Islam and Judaism, provide status for women and a just approach that takes their needs into account. Religious laws protect women and guarantee their rights. But how does this translate into reality? There is often a gap between theory and practice in this area. How can we ensure that the laws set forth in the Torah and the Quran regarding women are observed in practice and not distorted? In Judaism, the status of women is a very broad topic. It has received different expressions in different periods. In our time, there are two approaches: an essentialist approach and an egalitarian approach. According to the first approach, the differences between men and women are inherent in nature, and this determines their differences in social and family roles. According to the second approach, there is no essential difference between the sexes, and therefore their roles should be equal. However, equality is possible only if it is important for society as a whole. It must be fought for not only by women themselves, but by society as a whole.
