Tower of David Forum for Religious Leaders - 26.11.2025

The encounter began with the Qadi's description of his experiences at the International Jewish Lawyers Conference, where he was the only non-Jewish person. The conference was heavily focused on rising anti-Semitism, which led to a conversation about the status of minorities and their relations with the majority.

There was agreement that while in Europe Christianity, and also Judaism, had to go through a process of coping with the rise of secular currents, including giving up positions of power, in Islam this process is only at its beginning and already today we can see a growing openness to encountering the other.

Meanwhile, in the last hundred years politics has influenced religious discourse and caused it to become more radical.

An example that came up is the commonly quoted phrase about Jews as sons of apes as a derogatory nickname. In actual fact, the source in the Quran is actually one of respect for the commandments of the Jewish religion. The Quran tells of the members of a Jewish fishing village who saw that there were not many fish during the week, while on Shabbat there were many, and therefore they decided to desecrate the Sabbath and set traps for fish. In response to the desecration of the Sabbath, God turned them into monkeys.

The encounter touched on a few other topics but did not deal with the planned topic, which was left for the next encounter.
