Tower of David Forum for Interfaith Encounter of High-level Religious Leaders - 17.9.2025

The encounter discussed the need for an interpretive tradition alongside the written text.

In Judaism, the need for the Oral Torah was emphasized, as without it, it is impossible to understand the Bible. The words of the sages and the interpretive tradition are of particular importance.

In Catholic Christianity, the emphasis is on the official texts alone, without binding authority similar to the Oral Torah. Even in church councils (such as the Vatican) there is an ongoing process of deliberation, and this is precisely what Protestants disagree with – they seek to go only with what is explicitly written. However, Protestants also have tradition, but not with the same level of binding importance.

In Islam, it was noted that the role of religion is to unite under one roof, and therefore there is a need for rules. There are interpretations according to language and according to laws, and the ruling is collective and presented to the council of sages.

Protestants emphasized that the boundaries stem from the text itself, or from its interpretation: there is what is permitted and what is forbidden, but much is based on persuasion rather than authority. The truth is with God, and we do not know everything. Therefore, there is no absolute authority, and the definitions are not unambiguous – and this is seen as an important matter.
