International Online Interfaith Encounter group – Global Dialogue Series: Translating Differences- 2 encounters

 

October 20th

The session, facilitated by Dr. Raymond Hamden, explored the topic of everyday symbols in our traditions, the messages these symbols convey and how they are perceived by people outside our communities. We discussed food as both a marker of cultural identity and a representation of universal values and shared connections. Participants also mentioned clothing and styles as expressions of culture that take many forms. For instance, different interpretations of modesty dress and head coverings that can vary even within the same tradition, and how values such as modesty are sometimes interpreted by others as signs of oppression or ignorance. Several participants reflected on the experience of migration, sharing how food and clothing traditions often travel across generations, maintaining a sense of belonging and continuity. One participant spoke about her intercultural upbringing, explaining how she chooses not to adopt exclusive symbols or practices but instead finds meaning in elements from different faiths, while others found their religion a primary element to their personal identities.  We also explored how colors and geometric shapes can symbolize particular values yet be interpreted differently across cultures, alongside nearly universal symbols, such as the white dove representing peace. It was truly fascinating to hear participants from such diverse backgrounds share their experiences and stories.

 

November 19th

The encounter was led by Tamoor Khan, and opened with a reflection on using storytelling to encourage dialogue, especially in sensitive contexts. Participants introduced themselves and shared personal narratives from diverse backgrounds. The group explored how storytelling can foster understanding, resilience, and bridge-building across divides, drawing on experiences from conflict settings, intercultural education, and migration. Participants shared stories ranging from work with children of different faiths, to experiences of displacement, to the challenges of maintaining cultural traditions in new countries. Through these exchanges, the group highlighted the power of personal narratives to create connection, question assumptions, and support peacebuilding in meaningful, human-centered ways. We were so grateful to have participants in attendance from all continents!

קבוצת המפגש הבין-דתי הבינלאומית סדרת דיאלוג גלובלי- שני מפגשים

המפגש, בהנחיית ד"ר ריימונד המדן, בחן את נושא הסמלים היומיומיים במסורות שלנו, את המסרים שסמלים אלה מעבירים וכיצד הם נתפסים על ידי אנשים מחוץ לקהילות שלנו. דנו באוכל כסמן של זהות תרבותית וגם כייצוג של ערכים אוניברסליים וקשרים משותפים. המשתתפים הזכירו גם לבוש וסגנונות כביטויים של תרבות שלובשים צורות רבות. לדוגמה, פרשנויות שונות של צניעות לבוש וכיסויי ראש שיכולים להשתנות אפילו בתוך אותה מסורת, וכיצד ערכים כמו צניעות מתפרשים לעיתים על ידי אחרים כסימנים של דיכוי או בורות. מספר משתתפים הרהרו על חוויית ההגירה, ושיתפו כיצד מסורות אוכל ולבוש עוברות לעתים קרובות בין דורות, תוך שמירה על תחושת שייכות והמשכיות. משתתפת אחת דיברה על חינוכה הבין-תרבותי, והסבירה כיצד היא בוחרת לא לאמץ סמלים או מנהגים בלעדיים, אלא מוצאת משמעות באלמנטים מאמונות שונות, בעוד שאחרים מצאו את דתם כמרכיב עיקרי בזהותם האישית. כמו כן, חקרנו כיצד צבעים וצורות גיאומטריות יכולים לסמל ערכים מסוימים אך להתפרש באופן שונה בין תרבויות, לצד סמלים כמעט אוניברסליים, כמו היונה הלבנה המייצגת שלום. היה מרתק באמת לשמוע משתתפים מרקעים כה מגוונים חולקים את חוויותיהם וסיפוריהם.

 

19 בנובמבר

המפגש נוהל על ידי טמור חאן, ונפתח בהרהור על שימוש בסיפור סיפורים לעידוד דיאלוג, במיוחד בהקשרים רגישים. המשתתפים הציגו את עצמם ושיתפו סיפורים אישיים מרקעים מגוונים. הקבוצה בחנה כיצד סיפור סיפורים יכול לטפח הבנה, חוסן ובניית גשרים בין פערים, תוך הסתמכות על חוויות מסביבות סכסוך, חינוך בין-תרבותי והגירה. המשתתפים שיתפו סיפורים החל מעבודה עם ילדים בני אמונות שונות, דרך חוויות של עקירה ועד לאתגרים של שימור מסורות תרבותיות במדינות חדשות. באמצעות חילופי דברים אלה, הקבוצה הדגישה את כוחם של סיפורים אישיים ליצור קשר, להטיל ספק בהנחות ולתמוך בבניית שלום בדרכים משמעותיות ובמרכזיות אנושיות. היינו כל כך אסירי תודה על כך שהשתתפו משתתפים מכל היבשות!

سلسلة الحوارات العالمية: ترجمة الاختلافات (مجموعة دولية) - لقاءان

 

20 تشرين الأول
تناولت اللقاء التي أدارها دكتور ريموند حمدان، موضوع الرموز اليومية في تقاليدنا، والرسائل التي تحملها هذه الرموز، وكيف يراها أشخاص من خارج مجتمعاتنا. ناقشنا الطعام بوصفه علامة على الهوية الثقافية، وفي الوقت نفسه تعبيرًا عن قيم إنسانية مشتركة وروابط جامعة. كما أشار المشاركون إلى الملابس والأنماط بوصفها تعبيرات ثقافية تتخذ أشكالًا متعددة؛ مثل اختلاف تفسيرات اللباس المحتشم وأغطية الرأس حتى داخل التقليد الواحد، وكيف تُفهم قيم كالحشمة أحيانًا من قِبل الآخرين على أنها علامات قمع أو جهل. وتطرّق عدد من المشاركين إلى تجربة الهجرة، وكيف تنتقل تقاليد الطعام واللباس عبر الأجيال، محافظةً على الإحساس بالانتماء والاستمرارية. وتحدثت إحدى المشاركات عن نشأتها متعددة الثقافات، موضحةً أنها تختار عدم تبنّي رموز أو ممارسات حصرية، بل تجد معنى في عناصر من ديانات مختلفة، بينما رأى آخرون أن الدين يشكّل عنصرًا أساسيًا في هوياتهم الشخصية. كما استكشفنا دلالات الألوان والأشكال الهندسيةالتي قد ترمز إلى قيم معيّنة لكنها تُفسَّر بطرق مختلفة عبر الثقافات، إلى جانب رموز شبه عالمية مثل الحمامة البيضاء التي تمثّل السلام. كان من المدهش حقًا الاستماع إلى تجارب وقصص المشاركين من خلفيات شديدة التنوّع.

 

19 تشرين الثاني  
أدار اللقاء تمور خان، وافتُتح بتأمّل حول استخدام السرد القصصي لتشجيع الحوار، خصوصًا في السياقات الحسّاسة. قدّم المشاركون أنفسهم وشاركوا سرديات شخصية من خلفيات متنوعة. واستكشفنا كيف يمكن للسرد القصصي أن يعزّز الفهم والصمود وبناء الجسور عبر الانقسامات، بالاستناد إلى خبرات من بيئات نزاع، والتعليم بين الثقافات، والهجرة.
شارك المشاركون قصصًا شملت العمل مع أطفال من ديانات مختلفة، وتجارب النزوح، وتحديات الحفاظ على التقاليد الثقافية في بلدان جديدة. ومن خلال هذه التبادلات، أبرزت المجموعة قوة السرد الشخصي في خلق التواصل، ومساءلة الافتراضات، ودعم بناء السلام بطرق إنسانية عميقة. كنا ممتنّين للغاية لمشاركة أشخاص من جميع القارات!
