Young Adults in Jerusalem Interfaith Encounter Group- February 5, 2026

The group, with Muslim and Jewish participants, met in Jerusalem. The topic of the encounter was mourning and the rituals of mourning in Islam and Judaism. The participants discussed the concept of death and how each religion deals with loss from a religious and humanitarian perspective.

 

In Judaism, as the Jewish participants explained, death is seen as a natural part of life's journey, with a strong emphasis on the dignity of the deceased. Mourning rituals include honoring the deceased and expediting the burial, as well as accompanying the grieving family and offering them support and comfort. The participants explained that the primary mourning period, called the "Shiv'ah," lasts seven days after the burial. During this time, the deceased's family stays at home and receives condolences. During this period, clear signs of mourning appear, such as refraining from adornment, sitting on low chairs, covering mirrors, and reducing daily activities, with a special focus on grief and receiving support from the community. This is followed by the "Shloshim" period, which lasts up to thirty days, during which the signs of mourning gradually diminish. In the case of the loss of a parent, some signs of mourning continue for a full year, including reciting the Kadish and abstaining from celebrations.

 

From an Islamic perspective, the Muslim participants explained that death is a reality of life, a natural stage that every human being goes through. Islam encourages the love of life and good deeds, and emphasizes belief in death and the Day of Judgment, because this world is temporary, and when death arrives, a person's life ends. Upon the announcement of a death, the community is notified via the mosque's minaret, in coordination with the family, to determine the time of burial and funeral prayers. Relatives, neighbors, and community members then unite to support the bereaved family, in a manner similar to the community's role in Judaism during the mourning period.

Muslim participants also noted that respecting the deceased in Islam includes expediting the burial and performing the funeral prayer, a communal prayer for the deceased. Islamic mourning rituals are characterized by tranquility and dignity, such as receiving condolences, praying for the deceased, avoiding extravagance in displays of grief, and observing a three-day mourning period. In some communities, a fortieth-day memorial is held after forty days, during which family and neighbors gather to pray, and sometimes traditional sweets are distributed as charity in the name of the deceased. In Judaism, as mentioned, there are also organized communal rituals aimed at supporting and accompanying the family during their time of mourning.

 

Last but not least, the encounter concluded in a warm atmosphere of laughter and shared jokes about life, a moment that eased the gravity of the subject and reaffirmed the importance of the gathering. Participants emphasized the value of such encounters, which provide a safe space for mutual understanding, building trust, and fostering human connection, despite the sensitivity of the topic.

הקבוצה, עם משתתפים מוסלמים ויהודים, נפגשה בירושלים. נושא המפגש היה אבל וטקסי האבל באסלאם וביהדות. המשתתפים דנו במושג המוות וכיצד כל דת מתמודדת עם אובדן מנקודת מבט דתית ואנושית.

לבסוף, המפגש הסתיים באווירה חמה של צחוק ובדיחות משותפות על החיים, רגע שהקל על כובד הנושא וחיזק מחדש את חשיבות המפגש. המשתתפים הדגישו את ערכם של מפגשים כאלה, המספקים מרחב בטוח להבנה הדדית, בניית אמון וטיפוח קשר אנושי, למרות רגישות הנושא.

مجموعة اللقاء بين الديانات لشباب القدس-5 شباط 2026

عقدت المجموعة لقاءً آخر في القدس بمشاركة مسلمين ويهود، تناول موضوع العزاء وطقوس الحداد في الإسلام واليهودية، من منظور ديني وإنساني.

 

في السياق اليهودي، أوضح المشاركون أن الموت يُنظر إليه كجزء طبيعي من مسار الحياة، مع تركيز على كرامة المتوفى. وتشمل طقوس الحداد الإسراع في الدفن، ودعم العائلة المفجوعة، إضافة إلى فترة الحداد الأساسية المعروفة بـ"الشِّفْعة"، والتي تمتد لسبعة أيام بعد الدفن، حيث تستقبل العائلة التعازي ضمن إطار مجتمعي داعم. تلي ذلك فترة "الشلوشيم" التي تستمر حتى ثلاثين يومًا، وتتراجع خلالها مظاهر الحداد تدريجيًا، بينما قد تستمر بعض مظاهر الحداد لمدة عام في حالات فقدان أحد الوالدين.

 

أما في الإسلام، فقد أشار المشاركون إلى أن الموت يُعد حقيقة أساسية من حقائق الحياة، مع تأكيد على أهمية العمل الصالح والاستعداد للآخرة. وتشمل طقوس الحداد الإسراع في الدفن، وأداء صلاة الجنازة، وتلقي التعازي ضمن إطار من الوقار والاعتدال، عادةً لمدة ثلاثة أيام. كما أشار بعض المشاركين إلى ممارسات إضافية في بعض المجتمعات، مثل إحياء ذكرى الأربعين يومًا.

 

أبرز المشاركون في كلا السياقين الدور المركزي للمجتمع في دعم العائلات المفجوعة، وأوجه التشابه في القيم الإنسانية المرتبطة بالكرامة، والتضامن، والمساندة.

 

اختُتم اللقاء في أجواء إيجابية، عكست قدرة المشاركين على تناول مواضيع حساسة ضمن بيئة آمنة قائمة على الاحترام المتبادل. وأكد المشاركون مجددًا أهمية هذه اللقاءات في بناء الثقة وتعزيز التفاهم بين المجتمعات المختلفة.
