Jerusalem-Hebron Interfaith Encounter Group - February 5, 2026

The group, with eight participants, met in Beit Jala to discuss healthy eating. They explored the meaning of healthy food and its implications within different religions, particularly given their Islamic and Jewish faiths. They emphasized that healthy eating is not merely a physical matter, but also a moral and spiritual value. The Muslim participants shared the idea that health is a trust, and that individuals are responsible for it. They also discovered a similar concept in Judaism, where health is considered a religious value linked to the preservation of life, according to the principle of Pikuach Nefesh (saving a soul).

We then discussed daily habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle, such as choosing natural and balanced foods. In Judaism, there is kosher food, and there is a six-hour interval between eating dairy products and meat, which surprised us. There is also the importance of moderation in portion sizes and avoiding waste. If there is leftover food, it is forbidden to throw it away; rather, it should be used. Respecting mealtimes and their impact on the body and mind is also crucial. Participants shared examples from their homes of traditional healthy foods and discussed how to reconcile inherited customs with a healthy lifestyle today. The focus was beautifully on the shared values between the two religions, such as preserving the body, personal responsibility, and gratitude for blessings. At the end of the encounter, everyone emphasized the importance of these encounters, and it was agreed that the next encounter would be about Purim.
