Nazareth Religious Leaders Interfaith Encounter Group - January 18, 2026

The group of religious leaders in the Nazareth area, including priests from various denominations, rabbis, and a Muslim sheikh, met to discuss divorce and its rulings in different religions, as well as its religious, social, and humanitarian implications.

Each participant shared their religion's view on divorce. Some Christian traditions severely restrict divorce or view it as the final failure of marriage. In Judaism, divorce procedures are subject to a complex religious and legal process requiring specific arrangements and approvals. All participants emphasized the sanctity of marriage and the necessity of preserving it whenever possible.

The sheikh explained that Islam permits divorce as a last resort, to be used only after all reconciliation attempts have been exhausted. He added that Islam establishes clear and gradual guidelines for divorce that ensure justice, preserve the dignity of both parties, and minimize psychological and social harm. The encounter concluded that differences in religious laws do not negate the shared values between religions, but rather open the door to a deeper dialogue about compassion and wisdom in dealing with the realities of human relations. It also emphasized the importance of mutual learning and respect for religious diversity in addressing sensitive social issues.

Finally, at the end of the encounter, we, the religious leaders, decided to inquire with schools and institutions about their willingness to host us as representatives of religious leaders. We would like to meet with students in a friendly and informal setting, aiming to foster understanding and understanding.
