Is mail1.eircom.net useable for POP3 mail ( incoming and outgoing) via
Outlook Express on an eircom.net e-mail address?

TIA

Yes. (Actually it's POP3 in and SMTP out).

BTW if you're wondering if the mailbox is setup (or setup correctly) you can
try accessing it using Eircom's webmail interface.

funny enough for eircomnet subscription I have used mail1.eircom.net and for
eircom PAYG I have used mail2.eircom.net - I don't know why there are 2
servers, maybe if one goes down you can use the other.

To check to see if the mailbox is set up correctly in OE I send out an email
to the address I have just made and then click on send and receive and it
should send out to the eircomnet box and then bounce back into your inbox in
OE and then that will tell you that you can send and receive emails
successfully or not.

Andy.
