The Macbook is a well-made computer. I take care of my things, so mine (mid-2012) is in good shape. There is no reason to replace it, other than the fact that the processor won't support newer versions of OSX and the associated apps.
I purchased a new battery and upgraded my Hard Drive two years ago, as it pretty much died (at least that's what the MacStore "Genius" said). I've since been able to access the old HD on a "sled" using it as an external HD. But the new one has several times the capacity and is, well, new.
Same with my iPhone. It still works, and does what I need it to do (be a phone, text device, browser, camera, and iPod replacement). But, it will soon be obsolete, as I can no longer update the iOS and most apps will leave my version off their upgrades.
I feel you 100%. Began switching away to Google for this very reason 2022. Mac user for nearly 40 years, for design, aesthetic and intuitive functionality. The iPhone killed it all (sorry Steve, it was a great invention).
I was using my last macbook until it literally died (after 'updating'). It's a shame that we feel the need to replace or trade-in the machine that could be made to work. Don't throw it away though! Sell it on eBay. There are always people refurbishing macbooks and everything else.....
I have NOT updated macbook at all since I bought it in 2020. I lost 'everything' with my previous macbook in the process of 'updating' (with Apple technical support assisting me the whole way through!) and I am so scared of any updates. I suppose there is no other way - ? (These seems to be no older version of WhatsApp available as far as I could see.) I'm just not up to date with any changes and really puzzles me one day after one hour, green logo just went grey (do people like me exist? Well guess what, mine is a 2009 Mac Pro. I've upgraded some parts thru the years and it keeps working like wonders. Except of course, because of some companies (including apple) discontinuing software, some of which I paid good money for.
After working with FreeChat the application hasn't been updated in a while and it's buggy. The best solution is to open Whatsapp web in Google Chrome. Then go to the 3 dot menu -> Save and Share -> Install Whatsapp Web. This saves the Whatsapp web as an individual application that will have its own dock icon and work exactly as the old Whatsapp. Give it a try, it's a great solution.
It worked for a bit but then it crashed again so I decided to use Opera's Whatsapp sidebar feature since the browser is open anyway. Works a treat and doesn't use as much CPU/resources as the app so depending on the browser you're using, I'd rather go for this option.
It seems that while older versions of WhatsApp can be downloaded and installed, when activated, the program automatically looks for the latest update and there's no way to stop it doing that. The result is the same old message that an upgrade in OS is required and since I'm running a perfectly functional but apparently outdated Mac mid 20212 MacBook Air with Catalina, there is no other option but to use the web version of WhatsApp. Sigh.
What I noticed though is, that when the desktop version crashed my phone still tried to connect to the macbook in terms of linked devices and I ended up having 4 connections from the same macbook pro so keep an eye out...
I have automatic updates and check for updates unticked in my macbook pro / Big Sur 2013. I've downloaded an older version of WhatsApp - still when i try to start the app it checks for updates and won't load.
Had the same problem. The only versin that worked for me is 2.2353.64 which I was able to recover using Time Machine. But this really sucks, every time that WhatsApp releases an update, this happens. I'm using WhatsApp web instead and using the feature "Download App" from Chrome which allow me to have the WhatsApp web as an independent window and right now it works better than the official desktop app for Catalina. I fact, now I can use the play pause button for my music which the desktop app seems to damage once is open.
