My home laptop doesn't have any lights or indicators to show that I've got numlock, caps lock or scroll lock on. The only indication I get is when a program tells me I got caps lock on when entering a password, and that's just for caps lock. It's possible I missed this indicator somewhere, but there is no indicator near the button and no indicator above the keyboard.
I use Windows 7, with an Acer Aspire 2528 (I think, haven't checked the serial number recently, but it's a few years old by now, from 2010). I'm looking for preferably a built-in message from Windows which will tell me if I got numlock or caps lock enabled.
For Windows 10 with no num lock indicator light, you can go to SETTINGS, EASE OF ACCESS, KEYBOARD, USE OF TOGGLE KEYS, TURN ON SOUND so that a sound will alert you when caps lot, num lock, etc is on. I didn't realize this until after I brought my laptop home. I never thought to ask at Best Buy either. HP you did a disservice when you don't have this as a simple basic on the laptop for this model.
Use the native Windows "on screen keyboard": open CMD and type oskor just type "osk" on Cortana search. There is an options key on the on screen keyboard that you have to open and click "turn on numeric pad".Voila ! You will have all indicators you need.
If you have Microsoft Office installed, start Excel and check the status bar, it lists all the lock keys if they are on.Right click on the status bar to check which keys are indicated, you can check and uncheck them.
Agreed. I installed Sonoma yesterday and already irritated by the constant reminder. This a terrible feature for those who often type in ALL CAPS out of need and/or for efficiency purposes. I just submitted feedback to Apple support. Hoping a disable feature is added, and soon...
If I click the indicator, it will turn off caps lock (and the indicator will of course disappear along with it). When I enable caps lock again, the indicator is displayed again. It will not remain off.
Going to loose my mind!!!! It gets in the way constantly! there is plenty of code writing and other programs were I use cap locks to make it more efficient but I literally cannot see around the icon. Especially if you are searching for names in emails. They REALLY need to make this one optional! I rarely complain but I would guess that I have already lost 30 mins out of my day trying to get around the distraction of this fantastic new feature
The caps lock symbol has made my work miserable. The line of code suggested in this thread worked like a dream. But should a line of code in Terminal be the solution? I remember when you didn't have to be a software engineer to operate a Mac.
This "feature" also reeks havoc if you are using the VoiceOver screen reader. Intrusive doesn't even begin to describe the sheer annoyance of having this indicator pop up. I never asked for this and there's no way to turn it off.
To reverse you replace NO with YES. Don't know how to reverse yochees's suggestion, but once reversed, would be interested to know if my solution creates the same side effects, which I haven't seen, but perhaps don't understand.
To clarify, disabling the caps key is not what i'm asking, this is not an appropriate solution. I would like to know if there is a plist variable I can change to disable the indicator from showing in the interface.
Pasting a couple of lines of coded into Terminal isn't most people's idea of "programming". Using Terminal can be a bit intimidating, especially to younger folks who never used DOS or UNIX but it's really not that hard.
Oh, an please, while it's still working on your computer, pay attention to the caps lock indicator. You mistakenly typed your entire post in caps. I'm sure you wouldn't want people to think you were intentionally being rude to us, your fellow users.
As far as I can tell, there does not appear to be any style changes related to this indicator. As such, I am having no luck finding a way to disable it, as our company uses a styled JavaScript solution for cross-browser caps-lock indicators.
Adding a caps lock indicator to password text inputs is actually a feature of Mac OS X, not something specific to Chrome/Webkit. In Windows and Linux versions of Chrome, there is no caps lock indicator.
I did find that adding display: block to the password field caused the indicator to go away in both Chrome and Safari. However, given the fact that display has absolutely nothing to do with a caps lock indicator, I'd consider this an implementation detail (borderline bug) that is likely to be fixed in the future.
I have a HP laptop with windows 11. Today, as I've been typing on my laptop when I click the caps lock button on my keyboard, it comes up with a notification telling me caps lock is on/off. There is no sound notification, just an image. I have attached an image of what it looks like. It is getting in the way of my screen and it is very annoying. I have searched for different ways but they only provide 3 options to turning it off and none have worked. There is no dell software installed or anything like that, I am on a HP laptop. I've tried the easy access centre and that doesn't work etc. Please help.
Installed ubuntu-mate 20.04.3 LTS encryption on a HP 23-H027c computer. During boot the keyboard numlock and Caps Lock indicators do not light while entering the unlock key or the login password. Suddenly after entering login password the keyboard Num Lock and CAPS Lock indicator lights. Have no way of knowing if Caps Lock in on when entering unlock key or login password?
have you installed mate tweak? if so, you can enable keyboard LED which shows on the panel with 3 circles, I don't know what the first circle shows but the second is 9 for NumLock and the third is A for Capslock.
Will mate tweak allow the Num Lock and Caps Lock indicators to show status during boot? The Num Lock and Caps Lock indicators work fine after I have entered the login password. My problem is that I have no way of knowing if Caps Lock in on when entering either the unlock key or the login password.
Thanks tkn did not know about the arrow in the login password field. That answers the second half of my question. But I also asked about the encryption unlock key and no arrow appears in the unlock field? And there does appear to be away to show what I have entered for the encryption unlock either? How can I tell if Cap Lock is on when entering the encryption unlock key. The Caps Lock indicator light does not operate while trying to enter the encryption unlock. The Caps Lock indicator works fine after I have logged in.
I won't be able to answer that because I deliberately stayed away from system disk encryption since the introduction of UEFI. In my opinion the downsides of system disk encryption outweight the very small security gain on a mainstream OS by far ( I would switch to Qubes on Libreboot or Coreboot before I would consider whole disk encryption)
That completely depends on what disk encryption software is used and in which modus.
The decryption dialog of a reasonably effective whole disk encryption scheme should be started before the loginmanager or any other part of the OS is started so this is outside the reach and scope of the OS.
That said, you might want to give some information about your disk-encryption software (TOMB, VeraCrypt, EncFs) and your encryption scheme anyway (whole disk, all-partitions-but-UEFI, only /home) because that info will help anyone answering this question tremendously.
During installation of Ubuntu-Mate choose "Advanced Features" under installation type. Then selected "Use LVM with the new Ubuntu installation" and "Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation for security" Then entered the security key and clicked "Install Now" and then "Continue"
This is indicative of what happens when you part with your money for items like these. You pay your money, you take your chances and hopefully when you return home with the item unbox it and set it up the bloody thing works as described .
Yeah, I junked my Logitech K750 when Macally came out with a better idea. I have their ACEBTKEYA keyboard, which is battery powered and has the Caps Lock key, number keypad, cursor keys, and a on/off key. You recharge with a USB Phone charger. Very nice keyboard,
I agree, no caps lock indicator is a pain. Some computers flash an on-screen indication when you press caps lock but it's only transitory. Having been annoyed by a very inconspicuous caps lock LED on my Logitech keyboard (K270) and also with the lack of a physical volume control on all modern laptops, I came up with my own solution. See -Vol... - easy to build, cost a small fraction of what you paid for your keyboard, and I'd be lost without it!
As a draftsman who spends much of the workday with caps lock engaged, I have to say that I'm feeling some real pressure from Cupertino to convert to all lower-case notation for our working drawings. Today is day one with OS Sonoma - perhaps that floating blue up-arrow will grow on me, but for now it's always in the way.
I think I found a way to disable the Caps Lock Icon: I clicked on the icon, which turned off caps lock. Then I turned caps lock back on from the keyboard. It seems to be staying off until I turn caps lock off and then back on.
So I got a new Tesoro Durandal mechanical keyboard today. The keyboard is nice, and I'd like to point out that both the numlock and caps lock work fine in a typing perspective. But, pressing numlock and caps lock don't illuminate the corresponding indicators. I was aware of the issue before I got the keyboard, but to my knowledge, the indicators work while I'm in BIOS. So, that to me sounds like there is something linux is doing (or not doing) that prevents the keys from illuminating. I haven't found anything under /sys/class/leds, and I've got way too many sub-folders under /sys/class/input to attempt to figure out if any of those work.
I wanted to point out, when shutting down the computer (but still while in linux), I am able to toggle the num lock and caps lock LEDs. If I switch to another TTY, I am also able to toggle the locks along with the LEDs. It seems to me there's something X related that's causing this issue. I'm using KDE - anybody think that might have something to do with it? This never happened with my old PS/2 keyboard.
