Reading RAW camera image

IDL has offered the READ_EXIF routine since v8. Has anyone taken the obvious nest step and used that EXIF data to read in the actual raw image? I can already Debayer raw image data, but getting that raw data as the first step is still problematic using just IDL.

Please don't mention Python bridges, or my head will explode. Actually there's a need for a distributable package, which rules out requiring the end user to install Python.

Something like image = READ_RAW('test.CR2') would be the Beez Kneez... ;-)
