I'm using IDL8.8.  To fix an issue with a different application I had to update my MacOS to 10.15.7 "Catalina."   Since doing that I've had all sorts of problems with IDL.  I've given IDL and IDLDE full disk access, but different issues keep cropping up.  For instance, I now can't seem to open HDF files.  The HDF_OPEN function returns -1 for a file that I have verified from a shell comman is a valid HDF file.

Has anyone had similar issues and, more importantly, found  general solution?

There is a known file access issue on Mac OS Catalina that will impact IDL from accessing any files stored in specific locations that Apple deems 'secure'. This is related to the file system structure changes made in Catalina. Not sure if your HDF files are located in the trouble spots, but you can read more about the issue here as well as the potential work-arounds: https://www.l3harrisgeospatial.com/Support/Self-Help-Tools/Help-Articles/Help-Articles-Detail/ArtMID/10220/ArticleID/23944/Work-around-IDL-cannot-access-files-in-Documents-Desktop-or-External-Drives-on-Mac-OS-Catalina-1015
