Following demands from non-resident Keralites (NRKs) across the world, the state government has decided to provide them an online facility to participate in the state-sponsored survey on NRKs.
A door-to-door survey to collect the basic details about NRKs in state began this month.
However, many NRK associations have been demanding that an online facility be set up for those NRKs who live abroad with their immediate families.
According to them, if the survey is conducted in the state alone, details of a large number of NRKs would not figure in it.
"Considering their request, we have decided to set up such a facility. However, the online registration would start only after the survey in the state is over. This is to avoid any duplication of information,'' Norka minister K C Joseph told TOI.It was following the upheaval over the introduction of naturalization policies of Saudi Arabia that the Kerala Government decided to conduct a survey on the number of expatriates from the state. The survey being carried out by the department of economics and statistics with the support of Norka started in May.
It is said that the state government do not have any authentic data on the number of Keralites living abroad, though a study by Centre for Development Students (CDS) has put the number of NRKs at 18 lakh.
The survey covers the entire population in the state. Besides counting the number of people from each household working abroad, the survey also seeks information about expatriate non-working family members.
The figures are expected to help the government to formulate policies for the welfare and rehabilitation of NRKs, said Norka Roots CEO Noyal Thomas."We hope that details of a majority of NRKs can be collected through the door-to-door survey. Norka Roots is spending Rs 2 crore on the survey'', he said.
