You may have hundreds if not thousands of nodes in the Apache Hadoop* cluster. Typically these machines are stored in a data center. In the data center, the machines are put in racks. Generally, 20 machines fit in each rack. To help organize and manage the machines in a cluster, Intel® Manager allows you to separate the machines into virtual racks. It is recommended, but not required, that machines in the virtual racks match how the machines are stored in the physical racks. For example, if a machine named hadoop1 is put in a rack named rack1, then you should create a rack in Intel® Manager named rack1 and put hadoop1 in that rack.

1. Log into the Intel® Manager with a user that is assigned the Administrator role.

2. If any Apache Hadoop* services are running, they must be stopped now.

3. Expand out the Configuration menu by selecting the Configuration menu option.

4. In the Configuration menu, select the Nodes option.

5. If you have not already done so, add at least two nodes to the cluster.

6. In the Node tab, select the Edit Rack link.

7. To add a virtual rack, select the green plus sign. As a result, a blank entry is added to the Rack table.

8. Double-click the blank entry and then enter the name of the rack. The rack name must begin with a forward slash.

9. In the Edit Rack dialog box, select the OK button.

10. In one of the existing racks, left-click and drag the node with your mouse to the new rack.

11. Before you start up the Apache Hadoop* services, you must select the Provisioning Service Properties link.
