Place acetate sheet over the template and pipe the outline with black 20 second consistency royal icing. Then immediately flood the spider with the same icing. Use a needle tool to shape the icing and accentuate the legs. Let spiders dry overnight. When dry, peel off the acetate and use spiders as desired.
Flood the cookie with blue 15 second consistency royal icing. Carefully place royal icing spider onto a wet icing. With a needle tool gently press down onto the spider to make it stick to the wet icing. Let crust and then finish flooding rest of the balloon cookies. Let dry.
Spider-Man mask design is adaptable to pretty much any cookie shape. I used an egg cookie cutter to make this shape but you can use a round cutter, too. I also used the same egg cookie cutter to make Dinosaur Eye Cookies.
With a paper template and edible marker trace the eye outlines on a cookies. Then with white royal icing 20 second consistency flood the eyes. Use needle tool to accentuate the corners. After let the icing crust.
When creating wet on wet designs it is best to use flood consistency icing to ice the cookies and also for the wet on wet design. When you pipe onto the wet base contrasting icing will sink into the base layer.
First pipe straight lines across with black 15 second consistency royal icing. Then continue piping curved lines between the straight lines. The easier route is to use Tulip 3D fabric paint to draw the lines. Draw the web design onto one of the red mask pieces using the template as a guide. Set aside to dry. This method is MUCH easier, faster and produces a cool shiny and raised effect on the mask.

Next, find a Spider-Man face online and then print it out. Place the cake onto a cake board either a round one or a rectangle one. Place the cake in the center of the board. You may or may not want to cover the board with aluminum foil first.
Now frost the whole cake with your choice of frosting. In this case, I am using a chocolate buttercream frosting to go with my chocolate cake. But you could easily use a vanilla buttercream like this homemade buttercream frosting recipe.
Then roll it out until it is about 1/8 of an inch thick. Roll it back onto itself with the rolling pin and then roll it over the cake. Use your hands and fondant tool to smooth out the fondant on the cake.
Now cut out the eyes from the template. Place the eyes onto some rolled-out black fondant and trim around it with the knife. Next, cut out the white part of the eye. Set that part onto rolled-out white fondant and trim around it with a knife.
Use a thin paintbrush and dip it into a bowl of water. Then brush the water onto the black fondant eye part. Place the white fondant on top, creating the eye. Do this for the other one, leaving you with two Spiderman eyes.
Next, place it in an airtight container that is big enough to hold it or in a large freezer bag. If the house is cool enough it can stand at room temperature. For longer-term storage, the cake can be frozen as well where it will last for several months.
Thanks, Abigail. It should be okay to leave it in the fridge overnight. Just wrap it with plastic wrap to keep it from drying out. ? Otherwise, I would suggest baking and shaping the cake today. First, cut out your superhero mask templates. Cut two of the overall shape in the main color. Next, cut out any details (letter A, hair, etc.) then sew them to just the top layer. For the Spiderman and Thor masks, I just cut up the template and marked the fabric as I went to sew all the lines in the right places. I just used some black thread the a regular stitch on my machine. Sorry about the bad lighting.
