Hi,

This will be my first time to host a system outside a company, so I won't have my own high-end servers for Adempiere/IDempiere.

I would like to know what is the best option(cost effective) for hosting the system for 5-20 users. Do I need to get a cloud, virtual or dedicated hosting provider? Also for security reasons are there any hosting provider that has a portal or something before gaining access to the System login.

Thanks.

I use a Jiffybox from DomainFactory. I used the smallest possible system
size (15,- €/month) without problems with 4 concurrent users working
with it but I am sure it will work for more users.

The jiffybox is a virtual system. This has some useful advantages. It
scales like a charm. :-) It has no fixed contract (you can stop using it
every time and do not pay any more) and you can scale it from one
machine size package to a bigger just by stopping and restarting the system.

You are able to use two boxes (for database and application server) and
have a fast internal network between them if you want this (I never
tried this in a production environment, just did some small tests).

When you are really in trouble (and spend the money) DomainFactory is
able to migrate your system to a dedicated server (afair up to 16 cores)
without problems. You keep your OS image all the time.

I never heard of a "portal" to contrain access but I once set up a
system with an apache server before idempiere to have ssl connections
and this server only allowed connections with a private key. I had to
install this key in every browser I used. (This system does no more run
at this moment.) I would like to create a wikipage together to do a
documentation of this if you want to do it again.

I am sure there are other providers with similar offers. I use
DomainFactory and I am very satisfied.

I would *never* use a system from an us company (like amazon) because
you never know what happens to your data. I strongly advice you to a
system that operates under the laws of the european union. I am sure in
these (nsa) times your users will demand that.

Hi Thomas,

I still cannot decide whether to go virtual/cloud or go dedicated for max of 20 users for Adempiere/IDempiere. But that option you said that you can opt to go dedicated and keep your data is a big plus, does most vendor do that?

About the security policy you did, I think that's brilliant and I can opt for that policy too. Yes please do, if you have time to share it.

I checked out jiffybox thru domain factory, but it has no English language option though I think it is pretty good based on your opinion. The thing is may have a problem proposing this vendor to my client because of the language. About the nsa stuff, well I'd ask the users if they care about it lol. Then I'll prolly look for the right EU vendor that supports English.

I talked to DomainFactory (had to call them anyway). Their website is
only german up to now. They are sorry about that but did not change it
yet. There is no problem with customers outside of germany and they have
many of them. They can communicate on phone and email in english.

I wonder about this because they are one of the biggest providers in
germany...

The jiffybox strength is because they use automated cloud tools. Thats
why you can do everything yourself. This makes it fast, easy and cheap.
Once I saw a speech about OpenStack
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenStack). It may be that they use this
tool or something similar. Perhaps you look for providers using
OpenStack (if they tell you).

I love using Amazon's AWS hosting environment. I agree with Thomas in that it is better to host the appserver on one machine and your DB on another. Doing so allows you to scale the machines up or down independently based on your user load. I use the AWS M1 medium sized servers for production. They cost me $25/mo USD each as reserved instances. I also run a third T1 Micro sized server as a back up server. The micro server costs me $10/mo USD as a reserved instance. This server runs both the appserver and DB on the same machine.

I use a script that backs up production daily and pushes the production backup to Amazon S3 storage using the s3cmd tool. My micro server uses s3cmd to pull the latest production backup and populates the backup database every day. This setup is good because it tests disaster recovery daily, and it gives you an environment to stage and test your enhancements.

Here is a script to help you set up your AWS ubuntu servers. You can use this script to install all components (appserver and DB) on the same machine, or you can use it to create your DB stand-alone server and your appserver independently. It also installs and configures the needed tools to administer your DB (phppgadmin) and backup iDempiere (s3cmd).

If you are new to linux and you need a GUI, you can use the above script to install a desktop along with the iDempiere development environment. Here are the details for setting up your remote desktop and dev environment

I hope this helps!
