Hi all,
What's the best way to get from London to the conference?
My travel agent told me that it's complicated.
Anyone experienced?
Thanks, Chani Keren, Israel

Hi there,

I'll probably be getting the train from Paddington to Newton Abbot, which is close to the River dart country park. At the conference's website they say they'll have shuttles to pick people up from Newton Abbot station.
The train from London is not so cheap (around £40) but the bus doesn't get much cheaper either and takes longer...
Any other (cheaper!) ideas?

Christina, I'll be heading to the conference on the 5th too and be in London the day before so I guess we could definitely meet. Anyone else?

Cheers,
Marta from Portugal

We'll be arriving in London on the 30th of june and also wanna go there the cheapest way. we even thought about tramping there. So if there are enough people who want to go there, maybe it's even cheaper to rent a small bus.
I'm gonna open a list of people who want to go to the conference. maybe just answer to my post and add your name if you want to join in.

List of people going to the conference on the 5th of july:

Elias Egger
Henri Brugat

let's see if we could organise something!

If anyone is going to be traveling with children undewr 15 you can get a family rail pass for about 20 pounds. That gives you very big discounts for rail travel with children practically free. Probably pays for itself on the first trip. Good for a year.

If you fly to Gatwick airport, you don't have to take the train all the way to London, then the underground from Victoria Station to Paddington Station, and then the train to Newton Abbott. You can go by train from Gatwick Airport to Reading (which is on the way to London) and catch the the train from Paddington to Newton Abbott at Reading. It saves time, money and trouble.

Hey Elias and everyone in the IDEC group!
I'm going to be bopping around London July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and will be traveling to Devon on the 5th with Elizabeth. So if anyone needs company or wants to get some coffee before the conference let me know!

Hello from Brazil!

I'm arriving in London on July 1st, I'm also travelling to Devon on the 5th. After the conference, I'm going back to London and I'll stay there until the 17th.

It would be fun to have a pre-IDEC in London!

Hi everyone.

My son Perry is traveling from Israel to Bristol on July 5, arriving at 1325. Is anyone traveling via Bristol Airport who can go with him to Devon?

Thanks,

Hi!

I'll be in London from July 2nd before going to the conference on the 5th. A sort of a pre-IDEC conference sounds like a nice idea to me too! There seems to be a reasonable amount of people around London on those days so it should be feasible.

Lets all keep in touch!

Well, I'll be staying somewhere near Brixton at a friend's house but I can easily go anywhere else in London from there.

Does everyone know each other on this group yet?
I'm a first timer and dont' know anyone so I'd find it great if we really managed to meet for a drink or something before the actual conference!

This is the first time I've been to IDEC so I also would love to catch up for a drink or meal in London on the 4th.  I do not have anywhere to stay at the moment.  Anyone have any ideas?

Hey Christina,
This is my first IDEC too actually, and I will be in London on the 4th if you would like to meet up. ALSO, I found this great place to stay that is 5 minutes from the British Museum. My friend lived there during grad. school and they rent out single dorms during the summer, they might still have some space available. http://www.smsstudent.co.uk/dinwiddyhouse.asp Apparently it's close to a grocery store and it has kitchens available to the people who stay there. And it's pretty cheap!

Hope that helps,
Haley

Heya, i would love to travel to Devon on the 5th or even better 6th in
the morning. Do you still have a seat? when exactly are you leaving on
the 5th.
I arrive very late at night on the 4th and would love to spend one day
with a friend in London. If you start early on the 5th, i´ll have to
find another possibility.
Best Christiane

Hi Shoshana
Perry was in my tent for the time that I was there.  I actually quit the tent and stayed in a Lodge down the road after night 4 because it was so cold, wet and uncomfortable.
I hope he had a good time and found it interesting.
I would be interested to hear what he learnt or thought was most fascinating?
Thanks
Christina

Hi Christina,

Thank you for writing me. Perry is not a big talker so I don’t know that much about his experience. He mentioned it was cold in the tent but didn’t complain about it. He had a great time and I think the most interesting thing for him was to meet people from other countries. It was also his first experience of independence, being away from home and not having to report to anyone. It was an interesting discovery for him when people asked him about his country and culture and he explained it to them. For example, he told me that a lot of people have biblical names but didn’t know what they actually mean until he told them what their names mean in Hebrew. He didn’t seem to have anything to say about democratic education. It sounded like he connected with people on a completely different level.

I would be interested in hearing your impressions.

Shoshana
