Subject: Sign language interpreter licensing law update and amendments
To:

Hello,

This legislative session passed some amendments to the Licensing Legislation (HB 46) that goes into effect July 1, 2018.  Please take the time to look over the amendments and statutes attached to this email.

An amendment that will affect many interpreters, is the one that addresses educational interpreting in the K-12 public school setting.  If  an interpreter meets the minimum standard within the "Idaho Educational Interpreter Act" (all of the requirements, including the continuing education hours) then the interpreter will not be required to get a license to continue working in the K-12 setting.  If a K-12 public school interpreter plans to freelance and work in the community, then the interpreter will need to be licensed.

If an interpreter is working in the K-12 setting and they do not meet the standards in the "Idaho Educational Interpreter Act" they may be subject to the punitive actions set forth in the licensing law, HB 46.  The hiring entity may also be subject to punitive actions per this statute.

I am attaching a copy of the "Idaho Educational Interpreter Act", Chapter 13, Title 33 and the "Licensing Law" HB 46 and HO 411, the amendments to HB 46.

Here is a link to the rules that further explain the requirements for licensure:  https://ibol.idaho.gov/IBOL/SHS/Laws_Rules/2018%20Proposed%20Rule%20sign%20language%20interpreters%20October%202017.pdf
