WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
A Guided Tour of Deaf-Blind Interpreting:
This workshop will give participants an overview and framework for interpreting with and for Deaf-Blind and low vision individuals. It will include communication tips and tricks, roles and responsibilities, cultural issues, sighted guide techniques using hands-on activities with simulators along with group lecture and discussion. Comparisons between visual ASL and tactile ASL signs will be examined. We will discuss necessary boundaries when working with this community and recognizing differences between interpreters and Support Service Providers.
PRESENTER:
Mala Poe has an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in Deaf Education: Applied Linguistics as well as a Masters degree (MA) in Linguistics, both from Gallaudet University. She has been a member of the deaf community since 1986, and holds national certification. She has been interpreting since 1989 and specifically working with Deaf-Blind persons since 1992. She is a staff interpreter at a University for Deaf professors and just retired from teaching Interpreting at a Community College. With one less job, she still works as a freelance interpreter, consultant, and presenter on working with individuals who are Deaf-Blind. Mala has interpreted for, coordinated and been a Team leader for the American Association of Deaf-Blind and other National and regional conferences for/with Deaf-Blind people. She attended the Deaf-Blind Interpreter training at Helen Keller National Center and continues to train others. In her spare time, she serves as Vice-Chair for the Deaf-Blind Member Section under RID, and is President of the San Diego Chapter of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
