We are conducting a 2-hour, 1:1 coaching session where junior researchers are paired with experienced senior researchers to work on a concrete research task of the junior researcher's choice, providing valuable mentorship and guidance. Roughly, we expect the session to be of the following format.
Junior researchers will select and bring a concrete piece of research to seek coaching from experienced researchers. The research piece can be selected from one of the four tracks (PhD application, analysis and paper writing, doctoral grants and fellowships, and post-PhD job applications.)
An appropriately mapped senior researcher (professor, late-stage PhD scholar, equivalent) will sit and work with you on the research piece. They will provide contextual hands-on support by talking about their own strategies, thought processes, and provide constructive feedback on junior researchers' practices.
We are welcoming applications from junior and senior researchers attending COMPASS 2023 to attend this open session. Applications are due August 7, 2023 11:59pm AoE.

FAQ:
Who is a junior researcher?
Junior researcher is just a term we are using to refer to an individual who is seeking coaching assistance in one of the four tracks:
1. PhD application (target demographic: Masters, Undergraduates)
2. Analysis and paper writing (target demographic: Early doctoral, masters, undergraduates)
3. Doctoral grants and fellowships (target demographic: Early doctoral)
4. Post-PhD job applications (target demographic: Late doctoral)

Who is a senior researcher?
Senior researcher is just a term we are using to refer to an individual who has significant experience in one of the four tracks and can provide coaching assistance:
1. PhD Application (preferred: PhD students+ who sat in the PhD application process)
2. Analysis of data & paper writing (preferred: PhD students+ who published at least 1 paper)
3. PhD small grant/fellowships (preferred: PhD students+ who have received fellowships/grants)
4. Academic job Application (preferred: Post-docs, faculty, research scientists)

What if I’m in between?
While we understand that mid-level PhDs can fall under both junior researchers and senior researchers (coaches), there will only be one role during this coaching session. If you are open to taking on either role, please fill out both forms but know you will only be selected for one.
Other notes:
The session would be primarily in-person as of now. We are working with limited volunteers and it is only manageable if we do it offline.
You have to be registered for COMPASS to be able to attend this open-session.
Shortlisting of candidates is dependent on multiple factors, including, but not limited to how concretely they define their research piece and the availability of senior researchers (coaches) in that area.
