Hi Everyone! 

There are several events next week during the Local Foods Festival and some of them might be of interest to school gardeners! See below for details on some of the events. Hope you can join in! Also, please help us to spread the word.

Monday, September 12 at Noon

Local Lunch & Learn: Growing an Edible Outdoor Classroom

Co- Director of Backyard Abundance, Jen Kardos, will share a visual presentation of the design and implementation process that brought the new edible classroom to the downtown rec center and give a walking tour of all the edible plants that are available for public harvest.

Meeting Room B at Iowa City Recreation Center & includes tour of Outdoor Classroom, south side of the downtown Iowa City Rec Center. Free. Bring your own lunch and join us!


Local Food Fair

Wednesday, Sept. 14

5:00-7:00 pm Iowa City Farmer’s Market, Chauncey Swan Park

A local food showcase featuring food tastings, free samples and educational materials from farmers, local-foods based businesses and organizations promoting local foods. Free and fun for the entire family.


Featuring New Pioneer Co-op, Backyard Abundance, Field to Family, Geyer’s Oven, Grow: Johnson County, Growing Together Garden, Hy-Vee, Iowa Choice Harvest, Iowa Valley Food Co-op, Johnson County Food Policy Council, Lettuce Feed Others, Local Foods Connection, Wilsons Orchard, and more! Booth registration by Sept. 5.

Local Lunch & Learn with Grow: Johnson County

Farm Manager at Grow: Johnson County Jason Grimm will showcase the farm, and describe some of the successes as well as challenges they have faced in their first season and how they have overcome- or worked around them-  including large harvests, crop failures, pooling water and more.

Farm to School Farmer Fair (Chauncey Swan Park) & Ribbon Cutting at new Outdoor Classroom (Iowa City Rec Center) 

Saturday, Sept. 17 9:00 am-noon

Iowa City Farmer’s Market & south side of Iowa City Recreation Center


Part of the annual Kid’s Day event. Hands-on activities, demonstrations, School Garden Produce Booth, Food Tastings, meet the chickens and more; Fun for the whole family! Free.

Miss the Farm to Street dinner last month? Was able to attend but can’t pass up another chef and farmer collaborative menu? Join us for the annual Share the Harvest Dinner, a plated five-course meal featuring entrées with ingredients procured from local farmers led by Share Chef Heskeith Flavien and other local chefs. Seating inside the Share Wine Bistro and on their patio.

Local Lunch & Learn with Chef Kyle from Local Burrito

Chef Kyle Sieck from Local Burrito Catering, will demonstrate what it takes to prepare a "farm to taco meal", using freshly harvested, local ingredients.

Wednesday, September 14 at Noon

Local Lunch & Learn with Chef Katy from Trumpet Blossom

Chef Katy from Trumpet Blossom Cafe will use local tofu made by Old Capitol Food Company to prepare a vegan "egg salad" and will use veggies from local farms to make quick pickles to accompany the tofu salad for a delicious and healthy meal. Purchase lunch from Trumpet Blossom for $12.
