Hey everyone,

Hope your Easters going well! This weekend I thought I'd finally take a break and have some me time. Instead I think I should call it ReconstructMe time! For those of you that don't know, ReconstructMe is a software which allows you to obtain depth data using the Kinect sensor and render a 3D image. Using this I've actually been able do this for my own face and come up with an Aksat bust to 3D print :P lool. So I've attached a few images. The sidebyside.png shows the difference between me taking a very quick depth video and a long one. A word of warning though - the long one took about 6 hours to process! The quicker one took just under 2 hours to process. If you want to try this out all you need is a Microsoft Kinect or Asus Xtion and a decent computer. I’m going to also give this a go on the beast that I have sitting on my workbench as that is much better than my laptop.

If you want to find out more then simply go to http://reconstructme.net/ and check out projects. I used the Console version which I recommend solely as you can do offline processing which means you can take the depth data and then do the conversion from data to mesh whenever you like (especially helpful when it takes hours to do!). The console one does seem to say not responding a lot when doing the conversion but don't worry and just wait. If you get the standard version it does live processing and so it hangs a lot. to find out about the console version go to http://reconstructme.net/projects/reconstructme-console/ and check out how to use it here http://reconstructme.net/projects/reconstructme-console/usage/. Ill keep you guys posted on how I get on with it - hopefully I can get an Aksat bust printed sometime this week! 😜
