* Preference will be given to applicants who submit their research proposals around the following topics;
1) Understanding the role of agroforestry in Forest Landscape Restoration in East and Southern Africa
2) Agro ecological approaches to pest management in East and Southern Africa
3) The zero-carbon cow: Defining low emission development pathways for Kenya’s most important agricultural component
4) Restoration of Kenya’s forest resources through new forms of translocal governance structures: Case study of Mt. Kenya and Mau forests
5) Assessing the economics of climate smart agriculture. This research will assess the economics of climate smart agriculture at farm and landscape level. It will specifically investigate the cost and benefits of adoption by smallholder farmers of CSA technologies and practices and the policy environment for upscaling CSA at regional and national level. Fieldwork can be implemented in any of the following countries: Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia.
6) The synergies of the water-energy-food nexus.
The water-energy-food nexus has a growing importance not only on each one of its elements but as a whole due to the interdependence of these elements. In sustainability terms, addressing the nexus requires an integrated analysis that needs various forms of quantifying it in different dimensions and scales simultaneously (Giampietro et al, 2014; Hoff, 2011; ). This research aims to understand the synergies of the elements and systems included in the nexus with a GIS application. The analysis of multiple systems rather than a multi criteria analysis will allow to better understand the synergies of the systems and individual criteria including social, environmental, economic and governance systems
