Dear Readers,

Please find below how to merge ICQ Contact Lists and avoiding the re-authorization nightmare.

Sincerely,
Paco Capella

¹UIN - used to mean Universal Identification Number, recently it is being used to mean Universal Internet Number, it is also commonly referred to as the ICQ #.

Merging Lists without the Authorization Nightmare

1.  Requirements.

    a.  You need a Hex-Editor such as Hex Workshop v3.10 (May 31 2000) Copyright © 1995-2000 BreakPoint Software, Inc.; E-Mail in...@bpsoft.com; URL:  http://www.bpsoft.com, Price: $49.95 USD.

    b.  Your imported and exported ICQ AddressBook files needs to belong to the same ICQ client, dll version, and build.

2.  Overview.

    a.  The process of merging contact lists consist of two parts: one exporting and importing AddressBooks and another consisting in editing user (RESU) records in the UIN.dat file.

    b.  Note that the string "RESU" is "user" backwards.  It will have some meaning later on.

    c.  If you UIN¹ is for example 12345678, then your UIN.dat file is 12345678.dat.

    d.  Depending of your ICQ client, version, and build, the location of your UIN.dat file will vary as shown in the following table:

This table applies to Microsoft Windows Operating Systems: Windows9x/NT4/2000/ME.

Client Application

Database Folder

ICQ98 (all clients, builds, and dll versions)

C:\Program Files\ICQ\DB

ICQ99a (all clients, builds, and dll versions)

C:\Program Files\ICQ\NewDB

ICQ99b (all clients, builds, and dll versions)

C:\Program Files\ICQ\DB99b

ICQ2000a (all clients, builds, and dll versions)

C:\Program Files\ICQ\2000a

ICQ2000b (all clients, builds, and dll versions)

C:\Program Files\ICQ\2000b

3.  The Process.

Part I:  Merging Two Contacts List

Notes:
CLA => Contact List of UIN A synonym with ICQ AddressBook A or IABA
CLB => Contact List of UIN B synonym with ICQ AddressBook B or IABB

    a.  Start ICQ on UIN A.
    b.  Go to the ICQ AddressBook (IAB) and export it to a file.  Please remember the path and the filename.  ;)  This will be your CLA or IABA.
    c.  Switch to UIN B.
    d.  Go to the IAB and import the previously exported file.
    e.  Close ICQ.
    f.  Open your DBConvert.exe and repair/reindex your UIN B.
    g.  Open ICQ on UIN B.
    h.  Go to the IAB and export it to a file.  Plz remember path and filename.  This will be your CLB or IABB.
    i.  Switch to UIN A.
    j.  Import your previously exported CLB.
    k.  Close ICQ.
    l.  Open your DBConvert.exe and repair/reindex your UIN A.

Part II:  Bypassing the Re-Authorization Nightmare.

Use a Hex-Editor on your UIN.dat file and search for the string "RESU" and substitute the byte that follows to "02", that is, once you find the string "RESU" switch to the hex-frame and change the byte value as follows:

        Va           Va
From    lu   To      lu
R E S U e    R E S U e  For users in:
==========   ========== ==================================
5245535503   5245535502 Awaiting Authorization
5245535505   5245535502 Not in List but in AddressBook
or user was never in Not in List
                        but you just added him/her
                        to your AddressBook.
5245535506   5245535502 Not in List (ICQ99a). You own
                        details and preferences in
                        ICQ99b and later clients.
524553550D   5245535502 Deleted?  I'm not sure, but it
seems to be deleted user records.
524553550E   5245535502 Previously this user was
Not in List, now the user has
                        some "History".
