Dear all,

In CESSDA, we would like to document persistent identifiers (e.g. ROR or ISNI) for Organization using DDI Lifecycle versions 3.2 and 3.3. For Individual, there is an element ResearcherID with 5 child elements but I did not find this kind of element for Organization. I'm not a lifecycle expert so I would be very happy to get guidance from the DDI lifecycle experts in this group.

How do you document persistent identifiers for the Organization when using DDI Lifecycle 3.2 and 3.3?

Thank you for helping me!

Best wishes,

Dear Katja,

We had some similar needs for persistent and/or internal identifiers using DDI 3.3.

We decided to:

  • Use the DDI identification triple (or the URN) as the DDI persistent identifier (i.e. the version, maintenance agency, the ID as an uuid).
  • Store our internal (which is actually our canonical one) identifier in the r:UserID element.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Dear Guillaume and all,

Thank you, Guillaume, for the quick response.

For "DDI identifiers" we plan to use DDI identification triple (Agency, ID, Version) or/and URN as you suggested.

r:UserID sounds like a good option for recording external persistent identifiers like RORs. We will need these external identifiers for the interoperability with other organizations e.g. in the context of Scientific Knowledge Graphs (SKGs).

Has anyone used or considered to use //a:Organization/r:UserAttributePair/r:AttributeKey (for the type of PID e.g. ROR) and //a:Organization/r:UserAttributePair/r:AttributeValue (for the PID)?

Best wishes,

Hi Katja,

I would think, that r:UserID would be the best choice for any kind of foreign identification besides the DDI internal one (required for referencing). You might also specify the actual type of identifier using the typeOfUserID attribute. Possible values would then be ROR, ORCID… This way, you can assign various different PIDs to both an Organization and an Individual. And as PIDs are a relevant information for any cross linking, as you already stated, it wouldn’t be intuitive, to put this into a UserAttributePair.

Best,

Oliver

Thanks Oliver for confirming that r:UserID would be the best option for documenting the Organization PIDs.

I thought that repeatable //a:Individual/a:IndividualIdentification/a:ResearcherID should be used for Individual PIDs like ORCID:
//a:ResearcherID/a:TypeOfID  would indicate the type of the PID e.g. ORCID
//a:ResearcherID/a:ResearcherIdentification would include the PID e.g. 0000-0002-7668-5427
//a:ResearcherID/r:URI would be e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7668-5427
//a:ResearcherID/r:Description and //a:ResearcherID/r:EffectivePeriod would be used if needed
Have I misunderstood it?

Best wishes,

Katja Moilanen
