Working groups proposal

DDI Users,

The DDI Tecnical Committee is in the process of proposing 2 new working groups for the continued development and support of DDI-Codebook and DDI-Lifecycle. 

As new versions of each of these products are being released, the Technical Committee is proposing focused working groups for each of these products. This work would involve future product development and development of supportive documents and best practices for these products. Moving these products into separate workinIg groups allow them to have the focused attention they deserve and frees the Technical Committee to focus on the technical infrastructure supporting DDI work and the coordination and publication of DDI products and technical papers.

Hello,

 

We are wondering how documentation of rebased data has been handled or should be handled in DDI? For example, Labour Force Surveys data are typically rebased with new population data on a periodic basis. This can be described at the Group level. Does anyone create a new StudyUnit to provide more context to the data files that are rebased? Or is this simply identified through the names of the PhysicalInstance (e.g., adding “rebased…” to the title or subtitle)?

Chantal,

I haven't looked specifically at where it should be documented but it should clearly be more than a naming difference. For one thing terminology (rebased) may be different in different locations, organization types, or content areas. 

This is a processing change to the data so I would look at this structural content first. The general study description should refer to this description.

Not having this information clearly causes problems for the user. This last statement is the voice of experience from the early years of data dissemination on CD-ROM from the US BEA. 

I'll look at this further.

Hi,

 

If you represent your new rebased physical instances as derived physical instances from the “original” ones, I  would say that you can find more semantics and add more details with the ProcessingInstruction/GeneralInstruction/GenerationInstruction.

 

In close use cases, in addition the naming policy, we do not create a new study unit, since the overall survey process remains the same. We would create a different PhysicalInstranceGroup and type it with something like “censusrebased” through TypeOfPhysicalInstanceGroup.
