Hi, Wendy and all.

CVG has met today with Morten Jakobsen, who is the current service owner of the CESSDA data catalog (CDC).
To assist in CESSDA's efforts toward harmonizing metadata produced by its various members, they would need an external controlled vocabulary for the KindOfData element, with just three terms - qualitative, quantitative, and mixed.
These "terms" are already written into the DDI-L specification, and can be used as entries for KindOfData's "type" attribute, but for the CESSDA catalog an external CV is needed, just because not all of the members are using DDI-L, and the DDI (-C or -L) tools used across CESSDA are also quite diverse.

Morten's request made sense to us (the CVG) but I thought it advisable to also ask the TC if it is acceptable to create an external CV for a DDI class that already has a "CV" written in.

Morten also indicated that if the DDI Alliance does not create this CV, it would still be produced and published by CESSDA.
We all agreed, however, that it would be preferable to have this CV created and published by the Alliance as it would have more visibility, and the potential for a broader use.

Please let me know.
The CV in question would be quite easy to create and if TC agrees, I would proceed to create and publish it ASAP.

Thanks,
Sanda.

Sanda,

The general reason DDI-L has internally CVs is because they are needed for internal relationship purposes. DDI-C is mostly just a case of inheritance from the early DTD. In short, the general answer to your question is that if the CV group sees a need for any particular CV they can create and publish it. Alternatively CESSDA could publish it (as it supports their services) and DDI can reference it as it can reference any published CV.

If DDI publishes it you may want to identify it as supporting CESSDA, as I'm sure that if you name it more generically, there are members who will want you to expand it.
