Hi, Wendy and all.

At ICPSR we have prepared, and are getting ready to implement a new metadata schema with upgraded content.
We are also trying to map the new schema to DDI 2.5, but we are not able to find a good match for some of the fields.

1. For persons and organizations (Author, Distributor, Funding Agency...) we will need to add ORCIDs and RORs and since we don't find dedicated attributes for these, we plan to use the <ExtLink> element alongside the persons'/organizations' names.
1a. We also need a URI attribute for the GrantNo (some grants have their own webpage) and since it's not there, we will be using the <ExtLink> to enter that.

2. For keywords (ICPSR terms and MESH terms) as well as for individual terms/codes from DDI Controlled Vocabularies we will need to document the individual codes' URIs in addition to the vocabURI. We will use the DDI CVs for Analysis Unit, General Data Format, Time Method, Sampling Procedure, Mode Of Collection. The codes will be mapped to the existing Concept subelements for the above classes, but there is no place for individual codes' URIs, so we will be using the <ExtLink> yet again.
2a. In addition to the fields mentioned above, we will also be using the DDI CV for the Data Source element. In this case we do not even have a Concept subelement in which to include our CV terms. We would need the same configuration for Data Source as the one I requested above, i.e. a <txt> subelement for free text entries and a <concept> subelement that will also support the URI at individual code level.

That being said, I believe there was talk about deprecating the ExtLink element and can you confirm that it has been already done in the upcoming DDI 2.6 schema?
If the above is correct, will there be new elements/attributes in 2.6 to cover for the needs I described at 1. and 2. above?
It is my understanding that 2.6 is available for internal review, but I could not find it. I probably did not know where to look? Can you send a link?

3. Finally a question about a potential element <language> in the citation. I see it listed here: https://docs.ddialliance.org/DDI-Codebook/2.5/xmlschema/schemas/codebook_xsd/elements/citation.html under Elements by Substitution but I don't know how it can actually be used? Can you give an example? We will have a Language element in our new metadata schema, and we are planning to use the ISO codes for language in it.

Thanks!
Sanda.

Sanda,

I'll work at getting you a more detailed response this evening. (I'm sending from my phone)

The short answer is that 2.6 should address all of these issues based on my memory. I'll send you the link this evening.

The only delay in getting this out has been the high level document. I'm madly trying to get this out before EDDI. If I don't there will be a line up to take me out ;-)

More tonight,
Wendy

Thanks, Wendy.

Eagerly awaiting.
If 2.6 were to be published before the end of the year, we might be able to implement it at ICPSR in time for the new metadata schema going live.
That would be fantastic.
When you answer in detail, please do not forget to address the <language> issue in addition to the others.
We don't want you out.
Cheers,
Sanda.
