A hacker is basically a person with good intentions in his mind, he finds out software vulnerablities and try to exploit it, and if he succeeds in doing so, then he report it to the software developer, so he can fix it.
On the other hand, a cracker will use it to his advantage and will try to do bad things like break in to some other system, try to install a rootkit through that bug, and perform an act likely to create large scale havoc.

only difference between hacker and cracker is related to intentions
when we talk about hacker ,with fair intentions, good at finding falts, probably able to fix it,on the other hand ,cracker is the one who makes the real damage ,always feels the other person as antagonist

Basically....hackers build things, crackers break them......A hacker
is a person who is proficient with programming to an elite level where
they know all of the in's and out's of a system. There is NO
illegality involved with being a hacker. But A cracker is a hacker who
uses their proficiency for personal gains outside of the law. EX:
stealing data, changing bank accounts, distributing viruses etc.
so we can conclude tht ...."Hackers build things, Crackers break them"
