ItemDescription: The Happy Zippers by Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet come in a package of 8 different zippers in Lori's fun colors. Each zipper is 1" x 16" and has 2 zipper pulls. The Happy Zippers have polyester fabric tape, zinc alloy sliders and pulls, and nylon teeth.

I added zipper tab pulls to both of my Open Wide accessory bags shown above. With both of these bags I used the same fabric as the outer binding. But using a contrasting fabric for the zipper tab pull is fun, too! You can see the original post I did on these bags here (pattern and supply links are included in the original post).

Another project perfect for easy zipper tab pulls is my patchwork pouch. In contrast to the coordinating zipper tab pulls on the Wide Open bags, you can see that I used contrasting fabrics for the easy zipper tab pulls on my patchwork pouches in The Front Porch fabrics (left) and Clover Hollow fabrics (right). A tutorial to make these bags can be found on this post.

Easy Zipper Tab pulls are perfect for the small clam-shaped zipper bags I made with our Clover Hollow fabric. (See the original post here). Likewise, I also use these easy zipper pull tabs on larger projects such as my quilted duffel and travel bags. (See some of those bags in this post).

I was going to try to explain how or take photos but I need both hands to do it, so I made a video! This is really relevant because this might happen to you with any of my bag patterns! Let me know if you have any questions!

Wow, you made that look so easy! So far when I have tried that I get the zipper pull pulling up and down with doing any actually zipping-together. You have given me hope that it can be done though, and I will try again the next time I have the zipper pull off-the-tracks problem!

Thanks for the great video!

Hi Erin,

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I only found your site last week and have been madly sewing wristlets for my three daughters. Got a bit whoosh happy this afternoon and the zipper pull came off. Drafts I thought and then remembered I had seen a zipper pull tutorial on your blog, project saved and back to the sewing.

Thanks again, and love your work.

Tracey

I use a small or medium safety pin as a temporary zipper stop when I am working with a zipper where I have cut off the stops for any reason. When the zipper is closed, just pin it closely across the tracks, catching a bit of tape on either side so the zip cannot go past the safety pin. When you are ready to sew that end of the zipper tape, you can easily remove the safety pin.

This was a great way to add a zipper! It looks so professional. I think I made a mistake though somewhere: After adding in the zipper, the front and back of the pillow pieces are no longer the same size (the back where I added in the zipper is shorter now than the front piece). So should I have cut the back bigger than the front piece to account for the zipper or do you cut it after the zipper is in or did something go wrong in the way I sewed it? I do love your method and would like to use it again but want to figure out where I went wrong! Thanks so much!

This is just what I was looking for. I am making memory pillows for family and will attach a personalized zipper pull with initials. I think it will hang out nicely and work perfectly with this type of zipper installation!

This is a easy way to fix a zipper without replacing it. This method is really fast too. It works when the zipper pull doesn't close the zipper together anymore. I don't really like to replace zippers, because they always come out a little bit wavy when I do it myself.

You will only need a pair of pliers.

But if the zipper pull is really destroyed or is made of plastic you will need a NEW ONE OF THE SAME SIZE. YOU CAN FIND IT IN ANOTHER OLD JACKET. Or you can buy one online for really cheap.

(Sometimes they are made of plastic, so it is little more difficult to remove and replace. You may need to substitute it with few knot of thread or something else. There is many tutorial out there on how to replace a stopper).

(ONLY FOR IRON ZIPPERS)

With the pliers close the two sides of the zipper pull, try to make it look like the original shape again.

If your zipper pull is not too worn out you can try to close it directly on the zipper, without removing it.

(if it is made out of plastic, if it is too bent or if it breaks doing this, you need to find another one of the same size, they are available online, or you can take it from another old zipper).

As long as everything is in the condition it came in, we are willing to take it back, within 2 weeks of the day it arrived at your house. If you decide to send it back, please send us an email and we will issue a return. Just know, we will miss you

You'll be happy to know that installing a zipper well actually takes very little no skill. This isn't one of those situations where you have to train forever to get things perfect (I'm looking at you stitching awl), but instead just requires the right knowledge.

I used to install zippers with glue. It was a pain and usually the end result, even if lined up straight, was messing due to the glue residue. Then one day a leather working friend told me, "Just use quilting tape."

Since we are using leather, I really suggest avoiding plastic zippers. No need to put something that will quickly break on an item that is supposed to last a lifetime. I always use metal zippers and the best known brands are YKK and Ziri. YKK is used on pretty much everything. You could check the zipper on your pants right now and it's more than likely that they'd say YKK. This is great because, if you're like me, you probably cannot remember a time you had your pants zipper break. It's a good brand. There are tons of sellers on etsy that will sell YKK zippers. Ziri zippers are an even higher quality zipper, and have a price point to match. You can get a couple feet of it from Buckleguy for about $20. While I like using Ziri zippers on some of the high end custom work I do, usually I choose YKK, because the wide range of styles and quality (even if it's a bit less).

Quilting tape is just double sided stick tape that's thinner than normal. And all you have to do to use is cut it to size, peel off the back, and place it on the edges of the zipper's fabric. Then place the zipper in place under the slot you've cut. And, done, it's held in place for your stitching.

They come in packs of 4, either 4 black, 4 orange, or 2 black and 2 orange, and they have a TB on the pull. They're chunky enough to feel good in your hand and light enough that they won't make any noise while you walk.

I added these new pulls to all my bag and they feel very nice to use, whether I am using my finger tips or holding the zipper in my fingers and having the pull in my hand. Simple to put on. Having different colors to choose from, in addition to black and orange, would be great.

That allows us to be control freaks in the best way possible; we have direct control and oversight of the quality of our materials, our products, and the jobs and working environment that we help create. It also offers us a unique spontaneity: when we have an idea for a new product or accessory, we can design it, figure out how to build it, add it to our website and be ready to ship it out our front door all within just a few weeks. How cool is that?

If something goes wrong and it's our fault, we'll fix it for free. Repairs due to normal wear and tear or due to other things that are not our fault will be performed, when possible, at a reasonable charge right here in our Seattle factory where your bag was made. Defects in materials or workmanship are uncommon and almost always evident while the product is still new. Keep in mind that bags and packs are often subject to extreme wear in everyday use: do not expect them to last forever. Only true love lasts forever! You can expect a TOM BIHN product to give years and years of hard service.
