Grace is a British television crime drama series, based in the English city of Brighton and Hove, that stars John Simm in the title role of Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a dogged detective who, haunted by the disappearance of his wife some years previously, solves a variety of cases.[1]

Following strong viewing figures for the opening episode, a second series of three films was then commissioned in 2021, with broadcasting beginning in May 2022.[5] A third series was subsequently commissioned in 2022, with filming beginning in August 2022 and broadcasting starting in March 2023.[6]

The first series was predominantly filmed in Brighton and Hove; however, location filming also took place in Sussex,[7] particularly around the border between East and West Sussex.[8] The first episode, Dead Simple, was shifted forward in the schedules by a week, originally set to air on 21 March.[9] This was to avoid a clash with the launch of the sixth series of the BBC's Line of Duty. Subsequently, this led to the decision to postpone Looking Good Dead until a later date.[10][11][12] Subsequently, when the first series aired in the United States, it meant that Looking Good Dead was available to stream for more than a year before its British broadcast.

A third series was subsequently commissioned in May 2022, adapted from the novels Dead Like You, Dead Man's Grip and Not Dead Yet. For this series, Russell Lewis stepped down as showrunner and principal writer, with former Whitechapel writers Ben Court & Caroline Ip penning two episodes, and prolific screenwriter Ed Whitmore penning the other. The series also features Sam Hoare as a new ACC, following the departure of Rakie Ayola at the end of series two.[14]

How to write a TV series outline is a tricky skill to get right. You need to be both creative but also present your series narrative commercially so that Producers find it easy to read and it answers their key questions about the series as a whole. So, is there a set way? Some would say no, but I would say writing stories for Television Drama requires a certain process.

Writers need to know how to write Treatments, Series Outlines and how to produce a cracking Pilot episode. My work with writers via my script consultancy is all about developing the idea and then writing the documents that show the creative and commercial aspects of the story to their best advantage.

To write Treatments for Television well, you can read my blog here. This is a format I have developed over years of working on production and with writers now via my script consultancy. To write Pilots for Television well, you can read my blog here.

The industry requires you to not only be creative and come up with great series stories to satisfy our increasing hunger for a brilliant series drama, but they also require you to be succinct, clear and to give them easy to read, easy to assimilate documents that break down and present the DNA of your television series idea.

I encourage my writers to take each key character and work out their jump off point, their midpoint and their landing point in the series arc and then once they have complied a journey for each character, it is only then we consider the Series Arc as a whole.

The title of the series you have created is very important to my mind. I use titles a lot in my writer-development, to help structure your series. I refer to the title as The Narrative Through Line. The title can give you stability, a bedrock of theme, story, tone and character. Each story line you create, ideally and not always directly, should link back to the title; subliminally asserting the message you want to give an audience. Again, taking Happy Valley as an example, this title works structurally throughout the series, coming back as we continually do throughout the series, to place, the community, the strange and rather beautiful contrast between the glorious countryside of West Yorkshire and the reality of life that lies beneath for the people living on the peripheral of the community there and those police officers whose job it is to help keep order and right the wrongs done to the people of Happy Valley and to the central character, Police Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

No-one expects you to work out a beat sheet for each episode. A producer would not thank you for writing a series arc in such detail at this point in the Developmental conversation. What is needed though, is a clear indication of how much traction you can get from your story lines and how long the over all format is. If you are creating a 6 episode series of 1 hours then you will need to give a solid impression in your Series Outline that your characters can carry that much plot and that there is enough engagement via twists and turns to engender a run of this length.

More detailed story lines can be required at a later stage in the Development conversation but for the purposes of supporting your Treatment and your Pilot, the Series Outline should show how you draw out and develop the main thrust of the story and how in embryo, each character begins their journey and how ultimately they end it.

A pattern emerges when another male victim is found dead and eviscerated, his heart delivered soon afterwards. The media call it Jack the Ripper in reverse; revenge against the men who lead sordid double lives visiting prostitutes.

A serial killer is picking off fellow inmates, thriving in an environment where there is truly nowhere to run. Is it a criminal giving in to their dark urges or a member of the prison staff preying on the captive population?

A crimewave sweeps through the city and no-one is safe. An arson at the docks. A carjacking gone wrong. A murder in a country park. What connects all these crimes without causes, which leave no clues?

Totally gripped. not usually a thriller fan, I bought the first one, read it in 2 days, then went online and bought all his others which I had read in a week. I pre-order all his books but read too fast as I cant put them down. Eagerly awaiting the next book. Thank you MJ for making my reading experience so pleasant.

oh my gosh, my daughter and I love the Helen Grace series they are so hard to put down, every chance I get one of his books is in my hands.I have been reading for over forty years and have never read any books as great as the Helen Grace series they are so graphic which makes it seem so real,i have ordered all not them, great author.

I walk approx 10km a day and always have an audio book to listen to. I am hooked on the Helen Grace series and as of this morning I am listening to Liar Liar (read by the brilliant Elizabeth Bower). Unfortunately I dropped my ipod into the loo (duh) this morning and waiting on a replacement ipod. So back to the local library to reborrow Liar Liar and Littlge Boy Blue. Love the books so thank you M.J. Arlidge on your terrific books.

I dnt usually like crime thrillers but i worked with Aldridges friends father briefly and he told me about the Helen Grace books. As i was intrgued i bought the first Eeny Meeny and took it to Mexico on holiday! I got hooked quite quickly and devoured it in a couple of days!Started Pop goes the weasel on the flight home. After doing my law degree late in life, all i read was legal thrillers or chick lit.Not any more! Cant get enough of Mr Aldridges work.Chiling, creepy, thought provoking and brilliant!

Fantastic writer, grabs you from page one, unputdownable. I find that Mr, Arlidge writes in a style similar to Stephen Leather ,who again, makes it impossible to put down his books
I live in Australia, although I am from London and I have relatives in Hamphire so I find that I know the area in which D.I.Grace operates which adds to the interest.\Keep the books coming please,

I have read all Helen Grace novels so far, and am reading Love me Not currently. As an ex police Officer I consider them to be of the highest calibre both factually and as works of fiction. They hold me attention from page 1 until the end. Keep them coming for my sanity!.

I just randomly grabbed The Dolls House from the library and just finished it, in 2 days! It was Awesome. I was looking to see if there happened to be more DI Grace books and came across this page. I cant contain my excitement now! Going to get the first book tomorrow and start reading them in order. I cant wait!! Ive read only 1 book but i already love Helen! You are an amazing author!!

My mom reads his books and absolutely loves them. She would love to read the two that are in Kindle form but unfortunately she does not read or use any electronics for reading. When authors choose to only do e-books at cuts out a couple generations of people because they are not able to use or too hard for them to learn how to use an electronic reader.

The Sunday Times bestselling author M.J. Arlidge is a British crime mystery writer known for his Helen Grace British crime thriller novels. Reading his books in order means delving into the crazy world of Detective Inspector Helen Grace, a series which right now is at book #12 with Forget Me Not, released in 2024.

So far the reading order is the same as the publication order, except for the short novellas in between (e.g. No Way Back is a short story from the early years, and Running Blind has Helen Grace fresh out of Police College, assigned to her very first case.)
