We purchased their Accounting software years ago instead of signing up to a subscription service. We now only use it to create invoices only. We recently received instruction that they are moving to a subscription-based service and have BLOCKED access to anyone with the software previously purchased. How is this legal? Do you think this should be reported? Anyone else in a similar position?
Haven't heard of this before.
I can see why they cease to support a very early version or no longer make updates available, that is common.
Not sure they can block access to a PC based, purchased version no matter how old it is.
Yes, I was surprised too. They started deleting messages on their FB page as they were getting a lot of negative comments about it.
I would totally understand and accept if they wanted to cut off or charge for updates and service but this is so wrong!
Im pretty sure its all backed up on my computer somewhere and its ok for me as I was only using it for invoices but those actually using it for their books are in trouble now! We are getting as many affected people to lodge a complaint through Fair Trade.
I've been using Cash Flow Manager Gold version 7.5 since 2010. Everything is kept on my laptop and it doesn't even an Internet connection to work. I can't see how this subscription model will affect the way the program works. What product and version are you using?
That's the same version we have and bought around the same time but as we have an internet connection, it has been detected and locked. It prompts a ket and member id. The key no longer works and we are not 'members'.
We realise this may be a frustrating time for you. There are two things which are affecting clients who are using older versions of our software and we have had to make some big decisions to help you through the process.
Firstly, the ATO have announced they are making big changes to how small business reports to them. Traditional reporting and information sharing will be replaced by computer to computer transfer of digital information. This has already commenced with Standard Business Reporting and SuperStream, the future will see a range of other reporting included. No longer will it be acceptable to use old software.
Secondly, Microsoft's updating of its Windows operating software, and in particular free Windows 10, means that the data in old software is likely to be compromised as the two are not fully compatible.
Thus, we have decided that the best way to help you adjust to these major changes is to move to subscription based software so that we can keep your software up to date and continue to provide a very high level of, phone, email and web support. We have not made this decision lightly and we are probably one of the last Australian accounting software providers to move to subscription
VERSION 7 OF CASHFLOW MANAGER OBSOLETE FROM 1 OCTOBER 2017
Version 7 of Cashflow Manager, including minor update releases (i.e. Version 7.1 etc.,) and any earlier versions of Cashflow Manager are obsolete from 1 October 2017.
From this date these products may no longer work and if you are still using an outdated version of Cashflow Manager and it stops operating or you need to unlock it, you will not be able to do so and you must update to the latest subscription version version. We also offer a paid service to convert from the older versions to the current version of Cashflow Manager.
My wife had an ancient version of this software that does everything she needs that she runs on an equally old XP laptop and it still provides all the information the ATO requires. Not sure how she will cope being dragged into the 21st century.
HAHA! It is just a generic screen saying that your trial is up. Enter your key and membership number to proceed. I still have my key but it's not valid for this product. If that laptop is connected to the internet, you will no doubt experience the joy!
Edit: After typing all that I just realised the current ACL was not enacted until (2011) after the EULA in question (2007?) and my purchase which I think was circa 2009. That possibly negates some of the points I make below, and I've no idea what consumer protections were in place or not in 2009.
My wife and I just had the same experience, she rang up to find out what on earth was going on and they talked her into buying a 1 year subscription as "your current version is now obsolete and we've locked it". The explanation they've given on FB is not only incredibly patronising, the logic is laughable.
Much like the OP, I see no issue with withdrawing support and warning users that the application is EOL and will no longer be updated, may become insecure, may not maintain data integrity, may eat your socks, whatever... but to remotely interact with it and "brick" the application, locking the user out of their data? Stinks to the high heaven.
I've dug out the EULA and had a read, I can't find any section there which would justify these actions. Given the purchase price is less than $40k I believe the Australian Consumer Law should apply to the sale of these 'goods'. If that were the case some of the exclusions and particularly the warranty clause might be unenforceable and/or in breach of the ACL? I'm not trying to be a bush lawyer here so all of the above is just my (enthusiastic but ultimately uneducated) opinion. I placed a copy of the EULA hereif anyone cares to read it.
I restarted the program and another pop up window came asking for licence key and user ID. Once I put that it the program starts but there's a message saying that there is a problem and I need to call support. I ignored it and did some dummy entries, saved and exit.
Opening the program again, I get the same as above BUT once that is done, everything works. My guess is that they can only annoy you with the pop up messages but the functionality is not affected. I only use it once a month anyway so it's not a problem for me to put in the keys again each time.
I received the letter 2 days ago saying that i can subscribe $22/mth indefinitely. I phoned them up just to find out what was going on and they said i could keep on using it and that i would be fine as long as i did back ups. Two days later, it's locked.
You don't have to reinstall it. The popup will ask you to unlock the program (just like when you first bought it many years ago). Once you enter your key and user ID, you can use it as before. I've done it a few times now. Yes, it is annoying to have put in the keys each time I start up the program but it only takes a few key strokes (keyboard short cuts Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V). I have my key and user ID ready in a text file for copying. It takes me less than a minute and saves me $22 a month.
That's piss poor form. If the old version works stand alone, there is no reason to lock it. They could just run their new version and state the old version is no longer supported but you can keep using it.
Hey guys, just a bit of an update. When the box came up stating that my trial had expired, what i did was right click on cashflow manager icon on the menu bar thingo on your computer. Then just click on the 'close window' option and shazam... worked a treat. But be careful, they may be watching ;);)
My version 7 Cashflow Manager has functionality issues despite re entering in Key code numbers and member number. I can't edit GST on some items like registration which is not 10% GST. Sometimes the program freezes altogether. It doesnt seem right that I am forced to purchase a subscription version. I don't think I have ever used support from Cashflow Manager anyway so I can live without that.
