You understand and perhaps have touted the virtues of digital inspection forms as compared to a paper-based approach. Now imagine a digital form that completes itself by simply driving by a facility in the field. This is what a MIMS automated patrol inspection can do for you.
Automated Patrol Inspection is an inspection that facilitates visually inspecting facilities for obvious defects. The field user simply passes by the facility in the field and in doing so, without user intervention, the facilities in view are inspected as being in good order. Only when a user sees an anomaly is manual intervention needed to complete a detailed defect inspection. Examples applications of patrol inspections are compliance inspections, street light inspections, hydrant paint inspections, gas leak detection inspection, infrared inspection, signage inspection, third-party attachment inspections, anything that requires a user to visually inspect one asset after another as they pass by them.
Patrol inspection has been a GO! Sync and MIMS offering for many years. The return on investment due to the impressive efficiency gains is proven. Some recent and past examples are Modesto Irrigation District, Truckee Donner PUD, and Henkels & McCoy.
You may set some patrol preferences to change the size of your buffer to account for visibility conditions on an open main street as compared to a narrow alleyway. Additionally, you may opt to bias the buffer to the left or right of the patrol vehicle to align with their vantage point.
As the applicable patroled facility, poles in this overhead patrol example, appear in the buffer they are circled on the map and listed in the panel on the left. This is your opportunity to let the facility pass by or to intervene should an anomaly be identified. In either case, basic patrol information is recorded for that facility. The recorded information is
Not all patrol inspections need to be automated. In some cases, you may survey an area like backyard poles on a street block without carrying your computer and subsequently record them when you get back to your truck. For this reason, LADWP has a manual patrol inspection for each automated patrol inspection. In the case of a manual patrol inspection you simply lassos all the facilities on the map to be inspected and they will appear highlighted on the map as wells as listed in the left panel. At this time, you can pass or fail each of the lassoed facility one at a time using the items thumbs up or down button next to each item like with automated patrols. Additionally, if you choose to pass all the lassoed items, the large thumbs up button in the middle of the panel will do just that.
Various approaches have and can be used to report on the field collated patrol data in the office. Examples of these approaches are SQL Server Reporting Services, Operational Dashboard, or perhaps ArcGIS Insight.
