Subject: May 19 Community Gathering & POTLUCK: Join the Local Delegation to the US Social Forum
To: Ann Arbor Organizing Committee <uss...@gmail.com>

Over 30 organizations from Washtenaw County have already registered for the US Social Forum! Meet each other and let's build our local delegation to the Forum!....As we approach May 19th, consider these questions: What can the US Social Forum mean to Washtenaw County as a whole? How can this strengthen our community work and social justice efforts? How can we build across racial lines, socio-economic lines, gender-lines as part of this convergence?

Join the Washtenaw County Delegation to the US Social Forum in Detroit! Please bring a snack or dish, if you can

Dear friends,

A momentous movement moment is coming for communities in Michigan: the US Social Forum (USSF) is happening in Detroit from June 22nd to June 26th, drawing 20,000+ people from all over the state, the country and the world who care about building healthy communities and working for social justice.

Will you be there?  And will your community, organization, or congregation be represented at this amazing convergence?

A Washtenaw County delegation to the US Social Forum is growing and we want you to be a part of it!  Please join us on May 19, 2010 at 5:30PM at the First United Methodist Church, 120 South State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104, to learn the latest about the USSF and to build together a delegation.  Already more than 15 organizations from Washtenaw County are attending the Social Forum along with numerous individuals.  Come join us on May 19 so we can plan our road to Detroit!

What is the US Social Forum?  The USSF is a process where regular people, grassroots organizations and activists come together to learn and act on a vision for a better world politically, socially, economically, ecologically and morally.  What will be happening there? Hundreds of workshops, creative arts and social change projects, plenaries on critical social issues, sharing, learning, action, building and transformation! For more information about the USSF go to http://ussf2010.org .

Why Detroit? The Midwest site of the USSF marks a movement for social, racial, gender, and economic justice. Detroit has the highest unemployment of any major city in the country—with nearly one in four Detroiters unable to find work. Michigan has had the highest number of unemployed people in all 50 states for nearly four years. Throughout it all, tremendous community-based efforts in Detroit have provided transformative solutions.

Why is this so important to Washtenaw County?  On May 19, we want to hear YOUR answer to this question!  And as we know, our communities are facing years of economic turmoil, social inequalities, and families being unable to provide for their basic needs.  At the same time, we see around us powerfully innovative community responses and solutions to these challenging times.  We have so much to share with and so much to gain from connecting with other communities facing similar struggles.  The US Social Forum provides the perfect opportunity!

So, we hope to see you at the First United Methodist Church on May 19 5:30pm-7:30pm! To RSVP email Jaimie at uss...@gmail.com or call 734-926-8085.

Thank you,

Ann Arbor Local Organizing Committee
