I'm Brandy Thatcher, your facilitator for this workshop. My position
at Illinois Central College is in the faculty development office. I
work with faculty to develop instructional materials for their
courses. I also teach a variety of workshops on various technologies
for faculty. I have a BS in graphic design and I just finished an
Associates in Web Technology Systems. I really enjoy working with
computers and technology and love learning about and using the new Web
2.0 apps.

I'm married and have a 2 year old daughter that keeps me very busy
at home.

Now a little about you... You should've already updated your member
profile, but I also want everybody to reply to this discussion with
your introduction.

A little about you, your job position, your experience or perspective
on technology and anything else you want to share??

Hi,

My name is James and I am working on the new Healthcare Emergency Manager
Certificate Program at ICC. Most of the classes are going to be on-line so
I am always looking at ways to engage the students that are online.

I just purchased another gadget, a Flip video camera that I want to use in
some vodcasting and video content for my classes.

I am a full-time paramedic at Washington Fire Department, but I am off for a
couple of months due to a knee injury.

That's it for now!

Greetings!

My name is Terry and I'm a faculty member at Harper College.
As a web development and computer information systems instructor I
live and breath technology -- and I'm always looking for new ideas and
ways to use technology in my courses (online, hybrid, and classroom).

My academic background includes a BA in Mathematics Secondary
Education, a MS in Information Systems, and the Illinois Online
Network MOT (Master Online Teacher) Certificate. I'm currently working
on an EdD. For more info about my professional background, see

Welcome Terry,
I'm glad to have another technology lover in the workshop. I hope you
enjoy the workshop and find some useful technologies. I'll look
forward to your insight on some of these technologies. It will be very
interesting to see what your opinions of the technologies are from an
instructor in the technology field.

Hi! I'm Glenda Young and as Director of Network Services for
Southwestern Illinois College I'm responsible for operation of
webservers and internet services. Naturally, I'm interested in what
faculty plans to do with the space that I'm providing!

I'm married and have two daughters; the youngest just graduated from
University of Missouri, Columbia. I'm filling my empty nester time
with learning sign language and piano.

Welcome Glenda.
This workshop should give you a wide range of different technologies
the faculty might use. With many of these technologies, server space/
storage is an issue. In addition to faculty using their server space
provided by the college, there are also many free accounts that
provide storage space. We have a server dedicated to the faculty for
instructional materials, it's not really been utilized to the capacity
it could be. Mostly because the faculty have never been provided with
training and ideas for how they could be using it (I'm working on
changing that). One issue we have though, is that we do not have a
streaming server. So much of the larger media, podcasting, audio,
video,etc... really needs to be on a streaming server for the students
to easily and quickly view it. I've been working with faculty to use
Google video and teacher tube for uploading video and other free
resources. This alone will make for interesting conversation.

Hi Linda,
I'm glad you'll be joining us for the workshop. Your perspective on
these technologies will be valuable. I'm finding that many of the open
sources technologies are great way to increase and supplement the
technology we provide on campus without creating additional costs.

Hello everyone--

Well, I'm frightened to be in your company, even if only virtually.
My name is Michelle Rotert, and I am a professor of philosophy at Rock
Valley College in Rockford, IL. I am not completely and utterly
technologically inept, but there is nothing in my title, my
credentials or my job description about technology. Nor is there
anything in my genetic code that predisposes me to pick up this
particular talent quickly . . . so, I will do my best to keep up with
you all, acknowledging that already some of you have used words I do
not recognize. Still, don't worry . . . I'm up for the challenge!

My partner and I have two young daughters, both of whom are already
using Powerpoint in their kindergarten and first grade classes . . .
there is some level of desperation in my taking this course! I look
forward to working with and learning from all of you.

Hi Michelle,
I'm glad you are joining us! We have all levels of technology
experience in this course. Realize that the ones first to respond are
going to be the ones that are already comfortable with the technology.
The workshop is meant to learn about the technology so you're in the
right place. There are 30 people in the workshop and you're about #5
to respond; so give yourself a gold star. You're doing better then you
think. Don't worry about the terminology. Don't be afraid to ask
questions (there are probably 20+ people with the same question). I
try to put a lot of terms and their definitions into each module so
that you get familiar with some of the terminology. Just like in
education, technology people like their terms and abbreviations. :)

Hi, everyone!
I listed my experience with computers as mid tech and now believe
that to be an overstatement as I look at the terms and notes from
everyone else. I am hoping to be come more proficient in my use of
technology to assist in my current work as an adjunct faculty for
ICC. I teach in the nursing skills lab, CNA program, CPR, Med Term
and a favorite, Complementary and Integrative Medicine in the
Therapeutic Massage Program.
I am married with a blended family including 6 children, 19
grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren. Hal and I teach Ballroom dance
5 nights a week from our home studio and my spare time is spent
dancing for fun and time on the computer. I am not sure I have
completed my assignment for this week since we just returned from out
of town and I am just now finding my way around the site, etc. I look
forward to today's class. sjw :-)

Hello,
I am Carolynsue Wolf. This workshop seemed extremely interesting as I
teach 3 different on-line classes at Illinois Central College. Always
looking for different methods of presenting the material.

I retired after 32 years at ICC as I really didn't want to learn about
or work with computers. However, my Bb classes have totally changed
my thinking about the teaching/learning system. Six years ago I could
turn my computer on and off, and that was about all---but, thanks to
the TLC at ICC---I have developed 3 online classes. It is
wonderful. :)

Hi,
I'm Marty Klatt, if you have read my bio you'll know I'm a crime scene
investigator for the Peoria County Sheriff's Office. I'm also an
instructor for the crime scene technology courses at ICC. I'm pretty
new at this instructor thing, though I've been (and currently am) a
student. I'm hoping this workshop will improve my presentations in
the classroom.

As for me, I've been with the sheriff's office for 28 years and I'm
looking forward to retiring in a few years, my post retirement career
will be geared towards teaching criminal justice, specifically crime
scene investigation. I obtained an associates in crime scene
technology through ICC and I'm currently finishing my B.S. in criminal
justice through U of I.

I've taken many classes that involved Blackboard, and I've taken
several online classes.

My wife Sandy and I enjoy camping, baseball (the Cubs, of course) and
Nascar. We live in Peoria with our dog Jake.

Hi everyone. I am Kelly Crawford-Jones; joining you late this week as
I have been in Phoenix, Arizona at a conference for respiratory
therapy educators. We were so lucky to have mild weather there for
this time of year....102 dgrees.

My job position is director of the respiratory therapist program at
Illinois Central College. Our program is expanding and growing in
response to a high level of need for respiratory therapists in the
Peoria area and nationwide. The U.S. Department of Labor has slated
respiratory therapy as one of the fastest growing professions in the
country. I serve our national society for respiratory therapist: www.aarc.org
as an Illinois delegate and I was recently appointed to an ad hoc
committee to investigate how the society can serve the students in
this country. Part of the investigation involves looking at the
technology that may enhance student involvement such as blogs,
listserves, and e-learning websites. YIKES!

I love technology and teach online. All my face-to-face courses are
"hybridized" with BlackBoard. I feel that through the use of
technology I am better able to engage both the advanced and remedial
learners. I am amazed at how fast the technology is advancing and feel
that I could lose so much by just turning my back for just a short
moment. That is the reason why I am in this class; to try to stay
afloat!

I am married and have one son. He is a sophomore in college studying
multimedia. He is a very talented photographer and only uses a Mac
computer for his work. My husband and I keep busy in an organic garden
and are vegetarians. It is our way of relaxing and staying connected
to the Earth. Also in our family is a sixteen-year-old dachshund named
RoseAnne. She is the "queen" of our household, of course!

I look forward to this class and to getting to know all of you.

Hi everyone,

I'm joining late because I can't tell SPAM from real email and I
missed the first notice. I am a professor at Truman College in
Chicago. I teach Chemistry and Physical Science. I am also a web
developer and programmer (php and mysql). I use technology in my
classes. This Fall I will be teaching in a new enviroment, out new
studio classroom, and each pair of students has a computer at their
station. I will be developing new actitities for this new space.

My website is at: http://justonly.com

I have four sons - my second born just posted a video on YouTube that
he made with his two younger brothers - http://youtube.com/watch?v=fxPb7o6d1No
I was very impressed with his video editing skills and his ability to
put a sound track on to the video. I could learn from him.

I am also open to learning new technologies but it is really difficult
to keep up.

Hi Julie!
Hi Group!

The other day I posted a question about webcasting. I looked into the free
areas, but they were not robust enough for what I want to do. I am doing a
simultaneous disaster exercise with multiple hospitals and health
departments. I would like to bring them together using one technology like
webcasting instead of multiple technologies at the same time like I did in
the past. I found two sources, WebEx and go to meetings.com Do any of you
have any experience with theses providers on webcasting or any scary stories
with these providers you would like to share?
