Subject: Major Speech on Thursday

TORTURE IS A MORAL ISSUE

Dear Friends,

This Thursday at 1:30 p.m. EDT, President Obama will give a major speech outlining his views on counter-terrorism - including Guantanamo and detention policy. If you are able, please watch the speech. Also, please email the President right now (before his speech). This is our opportunity to encourage him to publicly commit to a real plan for closing Guantanamo and to express support for the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture.

May 17 was the 100th day of the hunger strike at Guantanamo. Over 100 detainees (well over half of those imprisoned in Guantanamo) have begun refusing food in order to protest their continued detention - in most cases without charge, trial, or hope of release. It is time for the President to lay out his plan for closing that prison .

May 15 was the three month anniversary of the day the Administration was supposed to respond to the Senate Intelligence Committee report. President Obama should use his speech Thursday to tell the American people when his review will be completed and to express his support for public release of the report.

Please write to the President today . Tell him that he should address these issues in his speech.

Thank you,

Linda Gustitus, President
Rev. Richard Killmer, Executive Director
