In the context of the new National PhD Programme in Artificial Intelligence (https://www.phd-ai.it/en/), we invite applications for three PhD positions at the University of Brescia. These positions will focus on challenging research projects aimed at extending the reach of future AI systems through innovative techniques and applications in the fields of automated planning, machine learning, and their integration. The PhD candidate will work alongside an outstanding pool of world-leading academics at the University of Brescia's Department of Information Engineering. In Brescia, we carry out research on both foundational and practical aspects of AI, and we are involved in a number of projects where we apply both planning and machine learning in different scenarios, from UAVs control to Industry 4.0, and Healthcare. The University of Brescia is involved in AIPLAN4EU (https://aiplan4eu.fbk.eu/) and TAILOR (https://tailor-network.eu/), two European H2020 projects centered on foundational aspects of AI and their application in the real world.

The Italian National PhD Program in Artificial Intelligence is composed of 5 federated PhD programs that bring together 61 universities and research institutions. The PhD program starts November 2021.

The Department of Information Engineering at the University of Brescia is an exceptional place for continuing your studies. The Italian Ministry of Research certified it by awarding it the title of Department of Excellence: only 11 out of over 180 such departments are in information engineering. It is also only 40 minutes away from Milan—the economic centre of Italy and one of the world's fashion capitals—and Verona—the city of Romeo and Juliet. It is also less than two hours away from Venice, often referred to as the most beautiful city in the world.

Brescia's cultural panorama is superb, with a dozen museums, including one UNESCO World Heritage site just within the city centre. Merely a few hundred meters away, one of the only 28 "Italian Tradition" certified opera theatres in the world hosts world-class productions each year. This is just one of the half-a-dozen theatres that drive the city's terrific cultural scenery.

Brescia's countryside is breathtaking. Within less than 100 km, you can walk on the Adamello glacier; enjoy World-Cup skiing tracks; experience the adrenaline of flying with wing-suits; visit, relax and have fun at the beautiful lakes Garda and Iseo that attract many tourists, especially during the summer.
