Call for proposals to organize/host the International Workshop on Planning and Scheduling for Space (IWPSS) 2027.
Occurring since 1997, IWPSS (https://sites.google.com/view/iwpss) has been a forum for cutting edge work in both technology and deployment of automated planning and scheduling for space related problems. In the years since the initiation of IWPSS, automated planning and scheduling has been deployed for numerous major (e.g. $B USD) space missions. In recent years this has included ESA’s Rosetta Orbiter, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), M2020 Perseverance Rover, and NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) missions.
Recent IWPSS Invited talks highlighted the use of automated planning and scheduling on the JWST (https://sites.google.com/view/iwpss2023/program/invited-speakers ) and M2020 (https://sites.google.com/view/iwpss2025/program/invited-speakers) missions.
The most recent IWPSS, IWPSS 2025 ( https://sites.google.com/view/iwpss2025/home) was held in Toulouse, France in April 2025. IWPSS 2025 included over 80 attendees, over 40 presentations and two invited talks.
Designed to not interfere with more general meetings such as ICAPS, AAAI, or IJCAI, IWPSS is designated non-archival, although papers and presentation materials are available on the IWPSS sites. IWPSS has adopted CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 which allows authors to retain copyright but allows for dissemination of papers in their entirety for non-commercial purposes. Authors may also designate submissions “presentation only” which allow for presentation of materials that appear at other conferences such as ICAPS, AAAI, IJCAI or other meetings and IWPSS hosts abstract information with pointer(s).
IWPSS is generally held on alternating years. In many cases it has been co-located (recently 2023, 2019, 2017) with ICAPS. But it has also been co-located with IJCAI (2015, 2009), the AAAI Symposia (2013), or other related events. The 2025 event was free-standing.
This call is intended to solicit parties to host and organize IWPSS 2027. Interested parties should reachout to Steve Chien at “steve dot chien dot ai at gmail dot com”. Information and background inquiries in advance of a formal response are absolutely welcome.
Formal responses are due by 15 May 2026 AoE.
An ideal proposal would include the following. It is expected that competitive proposals may not address all of the below.
