There was a feature that our website users found useful. It was the "Most recent" option when they clicked on Archival descriptions on the left hand side of the screen. When we upgraded to a newer version of AtoM, that option disappeared. It was very useful for users of the database that visit often, they could see at a glance what had been recently cataloged and made available. Now, it is sort by Title, Date modified, etc. and then Ascending or Descending. Shouldn't this feature be there? Is there a way I can get my IT person to put it back?

It was something that we suggested to archives users in our tutorial video and was used often by out patrons. The most useful options for patrons using Archival description was: Alphabetical, Most recent, and Reference code.  How can I bring these features back?

Many thanks for your help.

Daniela

Hi Daniela,

You can configure the default sort options for both public (i.e. anonymous, or not logged in) and logged in users via Admin > Settings > Global. See:
When you first install AtoM, the default sort options are by Title (AKA Alphabetic) for public users, and by Most recent (AKA date modified) for logged in users. These can both be changed via the setting, however.

The option you want is "Date modified" - this does the same thing as previously when it was labeled "Most recent." If you want it to be the default sort of search/browse results for public users, then use the anonymous settings.

If you wanted to make code changes to modify the label (so it says "Most recent" again), I believe that the place to do so would be here, for archival descriptions:
A couple of notes about this:
  • I haven't tested this myself, so please use caution if modifying your production instance, and back up your data first, just in case!
  • You will need to clear the application cache, restart PHP-FPM, and restart memcached if you are using it, before your changes will show up.
  • You may also need to rebuild the Dominion theme's CSS:
    • sudo apt install nodejs npm make
    • sudo npm install -g "less@<2.0.0"
    • sudo make -C /usr/share/nginx/atom/plugins/arDominionPlugin
  • Remember that your web browser has a cache as well, so if you don't see it, try clearing this (or testing in an incognito browser window)
  • Finally, remember that the next time you upgrade, you will need to reapply this change, since it would be overwritten in the new installation. If you have a custom theme, then it's possible you can put a template override in there, and just reapply your custom theme after upgrading.
Let us know how it goes!

Hi Dan, your suggestion was very helpful and I took your advice and changed the Sort by:  to Date modified under Archival descriptions.  I have another question, my users don't understand the term "Authority records." Is there a way to easily change it to read Names or maybe  Names authority record?

Many thanks,
Daniela

Hi Daniela,

Yes! There are a few places you will want to make updates.

First, the menus - for example, the Browse menu. You can easily change the labels on these by going to Admin > Menus, finding the authority record node (nested under the Browse menu), entering edit mode, and updating the label. See:
The other place you should make changes is in the user interface label settings. This will control the entity name text that appears below the result count on the authority record browse page, as well as the help text appearing in the dedicated search box. Navigate to Admin > Settings > User interface labels, and update the actor labels:
There may be a few places where the label is hard-coded - if you find any, let me know and I can create a bug ticket for future reference. In most cases, if these exist, one workaround (until we address any missing labels via bug fixes) would be to override the current labels via a custom theme.
