Hello,

Can anyone help me with the installation process.
I have downloaded, unpacked and uploaded the extracted files to my server.
I have checked the permissions of the directory with DreamHost and my Apache user 'ellieharrison' is definitely the 'owner'.

Yet when I run the installer, I just get a blank screen. I have tried these two addresses:

http://archive.ellieharrison.com/icaatom-1.3.0/index.php
http://archive.ellieharrison.com/icaatom-1.3.0/index.php/;sfInstallPlugin
(leaving them both plenty of time to load up in Firefox)

The browser says done after a few seconds and the screen remains blank.
If anyone can offer advice, this would be most appreciated. I have done the whole process above twice, which takes a long time as it is several hours to upload all the files to the server.

Many thanks,

Ellie Harrison

Hi Ellie,

If your browser says it is done, but it is only displaying a blank page:
The installer may not have been triggered from your root directory; try calling the installer by navigating to [root]/index.php/;sfInstallPlugin (e.g.http://255.255.255.255/icaatom/index.php/;sfInstallPlugin)

Please review the installation instructions wiki page: https://www.ica-atom.org/doc/Installation
There is additional troubleshooting help for installation here: https://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/Installer_warnings

Hi Jessica,

Thanks so much for getting back to me.
As I mentioned in my original post I have tried both the following URLs in Firefox:
And both, just load a blank page. I have been through the installation instructions carefully up until this point, so I can understand why it is not loading correctly.

Please let me know if you have any further suggestions.

Many thanks,

Ellie

Hi Ellie,

Please take a look at the web server error log. You may find some details there.
Use the debug mode while you are trying to reproduce the same error.

Thanks for this Jesus,

If I create an FTP account to access the server, do you think someone might be able to take a look, as I'm not an expert and don't know how to check the log etc?

Sorry!

Hi Ellie!

Yes, I think Dreamhost allows to access to the logs via FTP:

Hi Ellie,

Just to be clear, logging into to your Dreamhost FTP and downloading your server logs is well beyond the level of support we can provide as free support to the AtoM community.   We recommend contracting a 3rd party to provide application and server support if you do not have these resources at your institution, or signing up for our ICA-AtoM hosting plan <http://www.artefactual.com/ica-atom.html>.

Dear David,

I have mentioned in my previous posts- I have followed your installation instructions very carefully, yet I still receive a blank screen when trying to run the installer.

I am not from an institution, I am an individual artist and I am interested in experimenting with AtoM to catalogue my materials.

Ramiro and Jesus have been very generous with their support so far, so I will continue to correspond with them to try to fix this problem.

Best wishes,

Sorry Ellie,

Looking back at your post I may have misunderstood what you were asking.   I'll leave it to Ramiro and Jesús to continue with their excellent help and butt out of the conversation.

All the best with getting AtoM working.

Hi Jesus,

Thanks for getting back to me.
I tried to check the error log and Putty keeps crashing on me so maybe I am trying the wrong command, argh!?

Anyhow, I have created a new FTP user and moved the site onto that. If you are able to login and check things, that would be amazing!!

Hello,

I've same problem installing ICA-ATOM : white screen with both adresses :
[root]/icaatom-1.3.0/index.php/
or
[root]/icaatom-1.3.0/index.php/;sfInstallPlugin

I tried to install ICA-ATOM, with the same result on xampp, then wampserver 2.1e, wampserver 2.2a and wampserver 2.2e.

The apache_error.log file wrote : "PHP Fatal error:  Class 'Criteria' not found in C:\\wamp\\www\\icaatom-1.3.0\\plugins\\sfPluginAdminPlugin\\config\\sfPluginAdminPluginConfiguration.class.php on line 40"

I don't know where finding solution... If you can help me...

There is a posting to the User Forum that might help troubleshoot the problem.
and follow the instructions about PHP execution limits.

Hello,

I still do not have a solution for this either!

I have been relentlessly trying all the suggestions, but I also do not have advanced tech knowledge.
I have just reinstalled all the ICA AtoM files on my server and tried to run the installer again. Still a blank screen!

My host (Dreamhost) have just checked the error log for me and come back with this:

[Wed Mar 20 01:10:04 2013] [error] [client 12.248.40.138] File does not
exist: /home/icaatom/archive.ellieharrison.com/favicon.ico

exist: /home/icaatom/archive.ellieharrison.com/missing.html
No reference to the installer files at all?

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

Many thanks,

Ellie

This problem has been reported before:

I think that the problem may be related by some libraries that WAMP includes by default. Can you open the php.ini file and make sure that you are not loading anything extra? There must be a directive called "include_path", please try to remove it and then restart Apache.

Also, it may be useful to take a look to phpinfo(). Send me the report to my email, I can take a look for you. I think that WAMP has a shorcut to load the phpinfo page.

Just to let you know, our recommended platform is Linux and it's where we do all the testing. We know of some users running AtoM under Windows/WAMP successfully but if the problem persists you may want to try our recommended option.

Hi Jesus,

Thanks for updating this thread. I am still trying to get AtoM to work in all the spare time I have!!

Please could you talk me through you suggestions in layman's terms as I don't understand exactly what you would like me to try:

-----

Can you open the php.ini file
- where can I find this file and what should I open it in?

There must be a directive called "include_path", please try to remove it and then restart Apache.
- should I delete this file? And then what do I restart?

Also, it may be useful to take a look to phpinfo(). Send me the report to my email, I can take a look for you.
- Again if you can let me know how to do this I can send you the report - I am using my Browser (Firefox), FTP (Dreamweaver) and SHH (puTTy) to access the files.

-----

Many thanks,

Ellie

In Dreamhost there's a wiki page describing how to update php.ini:

There must be a directive called "include_path", please try to remove it and then restart Apache.
- should I delete this file? And then what do I restart?

In the link below you can see how to proceed in your case, although I was writing that to a Windows user. I don't think this is affecting you.

Also, it may be useful to take a look to phpinfo(). Send me the report to my email, I can take a look for you.
- Again if you can let me know how to do this I can send you the report - I am using my Browser (Firefox), FTP (Dreamweaver) and SHH (puTTy) to access the files.

Again, I don't think you need to do that. You should take a look at the debug mode, https://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/Debug_mode#Using_qubit_dev.php - you should be able to go to the server and edit the qubit_dev.php file using your FTP client as explained in the instructions. Then, open http://archive.ellieharrison.com/icaatom-1.3.0/qubit_dev.php and you should get an error, that's what I need to see!

Hi Jesus,

Thanks again for your patience with this.
I read the debug instructions and edited the index.php file to read 'true' so that it now displays its errors in the browser!

When I load index.php the Browser displays this message:

When I load qubit_dev.php the Browser displays this message:

You are not allowed to access this file. Check qubit_dev.php for more information.

[I'm guessing this is because I am not running the Browser on the same server - not sure what to do about this as I do not have a local host]

Anyway, can you deduce anything from the index.php error message as to why the Installer refuses to run? I have pasted the code from the php file it refers to below.

Many thanks,

Ellie Harrison

Hi Jesus,

Thanks for getting back to me. I can confirm my server (dreamhost) is running PHP 5.3.x FastCGI.

This is the default. The other options are:

PHP 5.2.x CGI
PHP 5.2.x FastCGI

PHP 5.3.x CGI

PHP 5.4.x CGI
PHP 5.2.x FastCGI

Waht do you recommend? If I change the PHP, will I have to reinstall all the files to the server in order to test it, as this takes a really long time and I've alreardy done it 3 times!

Many thanks,

Ellie

Hi Jesus, Hi everyone!

I am now testing the server on PHP 5.4.x FastCGI.

When I load index.php page in Firefox to run the installer I STILL get a blank :(

When I edit the index.php to put it into Debug mode and again load the page in Firefox I still get this error message:
-----

Can you see any potential problems with line 40 of the page it refers to?

Can anyone help with this? I've been trying to install ICA AtoM since January :(

I look forward to hearing from some friendly soul out there. I can give you my FTP details so that you can check the installation yourself. Just let me know if you have any ideas.

Many thanks,

Ellie

Hi Quincy,

We did manage to solve this problem in the past - it had to do with the particular PHP configurations on dreamhost. You'll need to make sure that these align with what AtoM expects/requires. Are you also using dreamhost, or another service provider? Dreamhost has documentation on PHP and Dreamhost on their wiki, here:

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Php#PHP_on_DreamHost

Other links that might help you in the Dreamhost documentation about PHP:

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Version_of_PHP_on_Dreamhost
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/PHP.ini
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Advanced_PHP_configuration
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Category:PHP

Please read through some of the earlier suggestions in this thread, as they may help you as well. Specifically, running through the steps in Debug mode could help give us some useful information on what exactly the problem is. It's possible that this won't work for you if you are using a third-party hosting provider - you may have to follow the steps from the Dreamhost wiki documentation to be able to edit the index.php file. Make sure as well that you have resolved any file permission issues that may result from using a third-party host. Again, some of this is covered in the previous posts on the thread, so start there, and then turn to the Dreamhost documentation (or whoever your hosting provider is) for help in configuring permissions, etc.

If you're still running into problems, be sure to let us know:

  • What version of AtoM are you trying to install?
  • What version of PHP are you using?
  • Are we correct in assuming that you are trying to install it via third-party hosting? If so, which?
  • If you've followed the above debugging suggestions, what kind of error message did you get when you repeated the process?

Best of luck,

Hello Dan,

Sorry for my late reaction. But i was busy with some other projects.

I'm trying to install ICA-AtoM 1.3.1
I'm using PHP 4.0.9
I'm trying to use a WAMP or XAMPP server to host my ICA-ATOM on my personal network.

I'm always getting the following error: Fatal error: Class 'Criteria' not found in C:\xampp\htdocs\icaatom-1.3.1\plugins\sfPluginAdminPlugin\config\sfPluginAdminPluginConfiguration.class.php on line 39

To be honest my knowledge of PHP and webservers is not much and i've tried to set some permissions for my apache server like some fora set, but i don't really know what i'm doing :).

I'm trying to run and install ICA-ATOM for a a local archive that runs only on voluntary work. So we don't have the budget for a consultant or someone like that.

I will try to have a developer take a look at this question soon as they will be able to offer a more detailed response. Nonetheless, let me see if I can offer a few suggestions:

  • It may help you to update your PHP version - our minimum requirements recommends PHP 5.3 or later. Please take a look at some of the other specs on the page; there's also a  basic troubleshooting section.
  • Looking at some of the older threads on WAMP installations, I noted in this thread that some PHP extensions are not enabled by default in WAMP. From the thread:

I think WAMP does not come with PDO extension enabled by default. Fortunately, WAMP includes a tray icon where you can enable PHP extensions easily. It should be there one called "PDO" or something.

  • It's also important to ensure that MySQL and Apache are enabled in WAMP. WAMP should have a user interface option to allow you to verify that both services are enabled.
  • Another thread (here) notes that some later versions of WAMP (2.2+) might not work as well as earlier versions:
I think the problem is with wamp 2.2. You can use wamp 2.1
Thanks for the info Clara.  The latest 2.2d does not work, although I was able to get it installed using the earlier build 2.2a-p1-x32.

...you could try to turn on debug mode in installation to see what is really happening there. Go to web/install.php and where getApplicationConfiguration method is called, set third parameter as value true:

line 5: $configuration = ProjectConfiguration::getApplicationConfiguration('qubit', 'prod', true);

See instructions on using the Debugging mode here: https://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/Debug_mode

Let us know what works and what doesn't!

Hi Dan,

I've tried all the things you suggested but nothing solved my problem. I get the "fatal error: class criteria not found" when i'm running in debug mode. I normal mode i only get a blank screen.

Quincy

Hi Quincy,

Hmmm, I'm scratching my head at this point! I'm sorry we haven't been more successful in helping you get up and running. A couple more ideas based on previous posts:

1) One possibility: you may want to check that WAMP is not adding extra libraries in include_path - there is a possibility that this is creating conflicts with AtoM

2) If you're confident enough, you might compare the downloaded files against those found in our code repository: https://github.com/artefactual/atom/blob/1.x/plugins/sfPluginAdminPlugin/config/sfPluginAdminPluginConfiguration.class.php

Make sure that everything is as it is supposed to be, etc.

3) You did mention permissions in your intial email, and I wanted to ensure that you've enabled all the necessary permissions - make sure that Apache has write access to the ICA-AtoM directory. Only a subset of subdirectories need read/write access but it will be easier for you if you give read-write permissions to the whole directory and its subdiretorices as the installation instruction recommends.

4) Can you try using WampServer 2.2E? It includes PHP 5.3.13 and we have heard it works very well with ICA-AtoM Unfortunately, I'd suggest that you run the installer again from scratch to do this. Remove the directory, download the tarball and start again - I'm sorry it means beginning all over, but At this point I'm not sure what else to recommend.

Keep at it! Here's hoping that one of the above solutions might help you move forward.

Hi Dan,

I have another question. If i can install ica-atom on a Mac, can i copy all the files and the database to my Windowscomputer?  I don't know if it's possible but maybe is it an option. I shall try you're new ideas tomorrow.

Dan,

The fourth option works :). So now i'm running ICA-ATOM. The problem is probably with the PHP version.

Many thanks for all you're nice and fast support.

Greetings Quincy

Hi Quincy,

Glad to hear that you're up and running! For reference: you could certainly do an SQL dump from a Mac installation, and bring that into a Windows installation via the command-line - MySQL is platform-independent, so this should work. For the digital objects, you would need to go retrieve them from the uploads folder and move them separately.

Thanks again for the update.
